Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads. 4And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel.

[Revelation 7:3-4]

Theories abound about the identity of the 144,000 in Revelation. Some religious organizations, such as Jehovah’s Witnesses, have established entire doctrines around this enigmatic group of people.

Who are the 144,000?

Is this a merely symbolic number representing a bigger group of people? Is this referring only the Jews? Or perhaps this number represents the church?

The book of Revelation — like all prophetic Scripture — is best understood in prophetic patterns and typology. The 6th Seal of Revelation is a perfect example of how the Bible uses themes and layers to paint a picture of the end times through the lens of apocalyptic literature.

When we compare the description of the 6th Seal to the rest of Scripture, it becomes evident that it is describing the catastrophic events that precede the Day of the LORD and the return of Jesus to judge the wicked.

Popular pastors and teachers in the West often persuade their congregations that God’s people will be removed from the earth prior to the great tribulation and therefore are exempt from this future time of suffering and persecution. However, suffering and martyrdom is an everyday reality for the church in the rest of the world.

Once again, the Scriptures paint an entirely different picture than the gospel-lite version of Christianity presented in dispensational theology. Not only does Jesus promise His followers tribulation and suffering in this life, but also the death of the saints is one of the most consistent and clear threads that runs throughout the book of Revelation. The witness of the church will shine the brightest against the backdrop of the darkest days in human history.

The Seals of Revelation represent the major headlines of the great tribulation — including war, violence, persecution, famine, drought, economic collapse and hyperinflation.

All of these signs will increasingly grow more frequent and intense as the labor pains of the last days lead to the agonizing distress of the greatest season of suffering the world has ever seen.

The Lord Jesus Christ is revealed to us through Scripture in a complex array of characteristics and with a myriad of faces and a variety of functions as the Son of God and Son of Man. In His humanity Jesus is revealed as the Suffering Servant, the Worthy Lamb of God who lays down His life. In His deity, Jesus is the Roaring Lion who is coming as the conquering King of kings and Judge of all the earth.

This dynamic dichotomy is seen most distinctly in Revelation 5, where Jesus takes the scroll from the right hand of the Father and rises up to accomplish God’s will and bring everything to its appointed end.

When the LORD gave the instructions to build the earthly tabernacle and temple, He patterned them both from the heavenly temple in the New Jerusalem. God’s heavenly throne is the most holy place in all the universe — the place where God resides in all His concentrated glory and power.

John — like so many of the prophets before him — was taken in the Spirit to stand before the throne of God, and this supernatural vision of God would become the foundation of his prophecy that is known as the Revelation of Jesus Christ.
