Stranger Thing #13 – Dinosaurs

“Behold Behemoth,
which I made along with you …”

[Job 40:15]

Okay children, gather ’round. Let’s play a game!

Who likes dinosaurs?

Who thinks dinosaurs are cool?

Alright! Now tell me … when did the dinosaurs live?

Millions of years ago!

That’s right, kids! Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago. In a land before time. Long before man ever evolved on the earth …

I must give credit where credit is due. Those driving the naturalistic, Darwinian agenda have done a masterful job of deceiving the masses, propagating their lies, and conditioning our children to believe the imaginary fairytale of evolution.

Open any children’s book on dinosaurs. Watch any dinosaur cartoon or movie. Read every science text book in the classroom and there you will find the same story, relentlessly reinforced with each gullible generation.

Millions of years ago the dinosaurs roamed the earth …

Even many Bible-believing Christians — perhaps some of you reading this now — have unquestionably accepted the evolutionary model of history and its millions of years. And I would be willing to bet that dinosaurs have a lot to do with it.

Once again, when we honestly compare God’s account of creation with man’s account of evolution, we are forced to admit that they are mutually exclusive and historically irreconcilable. Either God’s word is true and dinosaurs were part of the original creation, or man’s word is true and dinosaurs evolved and became extinct millions of years ago.

Both cannot be true … so I say let God be true and every man a liar.

The Bible Describes Dinosaurs and Dragons

If we are seriously to take God’s word at face value, then we are forced to believe that God created the dinosaurs along with all other sea and land animals on Days 5-6 of the original creation week. I used the word “forced” intentionally because the word of God does not leave room for any other alternative, especially the evolution of species over millions of years.

“So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good … God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.”

[Genesis 1:21, 25]

The Bible uses quantitative adjectives like “every” and “all” to make a point. God made everything at the beginning. If God created every creature of the sea, every winged creature and every land animal, then He created the dinosaurs of all kinds at the beginning.

Let’s not forget that the word “dinosaur” is a relatively new term, having originated in the mid 1800s. Dinosaur simply means “terrible lizard” and was created to describe some of the enormous reptilian fossils that began to emerge in the geologic record.

Let us not forge that most reptiles never stop growing throughout their lifetime, meaning that even lizards today would potentially grow to enormous sizes if they could live for more than just a few decades. If lizards, like men, lived to hundred of years old before the flood in optimal environmental conditions, it only stands to reason that they would have grown to be massive beasts.

Before dinosaur became the colloquial term for these terrible lizards, the most common historical name for the dinosaurs was “dragon.” The Bible uses the term dragon both literally and figuratively to describe dangerous creatures of enormous size and strength [see Psalm 74:13-14]. Like the many dragon legends of the past that are found in nearly every ancient civilization, the dragon was universally recognized as a fiercesome beast.

The Leviathan is one of the mysterious creatures found in the Bible that seems to portray a dragon or dinosaur. Although the Bible does use the Leviathan figuratively at times to illustrate chaos or destruction, Job 41 provides a most detailed description of the Leviathan that strongly suggest it was a real creature. For sake of space, I will highlight some the characteristics of the Leviathan directly from Job 41.

  1. Lives and moves about in both water and land
  2. Cannot be caught with a hook or harpoon
  3. Cannot be tamed or bridled
  4. Teeth of terror
  5. Rows of shields on its back
  6. Scales like sharp potsherds on its belly
  7. Scaled are resistant to any human weapon
  8. Breath kindles smoke like coal
  9. Flames of fire shoot from its mouth
  10. When it raises up to attack, the mighty flee in fear

I can’t speak for you, but this sounds exactly like a dinosaur, or terrible lizard, to me!

The second creature worth mentioning is the Behemoth. There is no creature alive today that matches the description given by the Bible. Consider God’s evaluation of the Behemoth in Job 40.

“Look at Behemoth,
which I made along with you
and which feeds on grass like an ox.
What strength it has in its loins,
what power in the muscles of its belly!
Its tail sways like a cedar;
the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.
Its bones are tubes of bronze,
its limbs like rods of iron.
It ranks first among the works of God,
yet its Maker can approach it with his sword

[Job 40:15-19 – NIV]

The Behemoth is an exact description of what we know as the sauropod dinosaurs — the largest creatures to ever walk the face of this earth. And God declares that He created Behemoth “along with” man [Job 40:15], which means at the same time, referring to Day 6 of creation.

Sauropods were herbivores, had enormous loin muscles, legs, and underbellies to support their weight. Their fossilized bones look precisely like massive tubes of bronze and iron rods. And the tail of the sauropod — unlike an elephant or hippo — was long and muscular, swaying like a cedar tree.

Again, the Bible clearly speaks of dinosaurs as being part of the original creation, and it is evident that ancient men like Adam, Noah, and Job lived alongside these majestic creatures both before and after the flood.

Ancient Legends and Historical Artifacts

It is worth again mentioning that ancient legends all over the world refer to dragons as real creatures. Writings about Alexander the Great, Saint George of England and Marco Polo, among countless others, provide corroborating reports about the ancient dinosaurs that lived with men.

Beyond that, there are some that have surfaced over the years that have produced some uncanny representations of dinosaurs. The reason this is so unexpected to the naturalists is because from the evolutionary viewpoint, man and dinosaurs never lived together. But if ancient people groups produced exact replicas of dinosaurs in their art and pottery, then it can only mean one thing … they saw dinosaurs with their own eyes. You can discover more here.

Finally, there is significant geologic evidence that dinosaurs lived with man. For example, archaeologists have found human fossils and footprints within the same strata as dinosaur footprints. Soft tissue and even red blood cells have been discovered in dinosaur bones, proving the fossils are much younger than expected.

The evidence abounds. Dinosaurs can be explained by Biblical creation and fit precisely within the true historical record of mankind. Dinosaurs were created by God during the creation week, along with man and the other animals. Dinosaurs were on the ark with Noah, and dinosaurs lived alongside man even after the flood.

We do not need millions of years to explain the origin and existence of these majestic creatures. We only need let God be true … and every man a liar.

Stranger Thing #12 — Pangaea

“And God said, ‘Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.’ And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.”

[Genesis 1:9-10]

The overwhelming majority of physical scientists and geologists advocate a theory that the ancient earth’s land mass once fit together like a jigsaw puzzle and consisted of a supercontinent, called Pangaea. According to uniformitarian models of the earth, plate tectonics produced continental drift over millions of years and Pangaea gradually drifted apart forming the oceans and major continents of today.

Although the Bible does not explicitly teach that the earth was once a supercontinent, the basic concept of Pangaea is possible within Biblical creation models [see Genesis 1:9-10]. The geologic record seems to provide evidence that the continents once were interconnected.

For example, many rock types and formations abruptly end on the coast of one continent and just as abruptly begin on the coast of another continent. In many instances, these similar rock patterns and formations are found on the very continents that seem to have fit together in the past, which would imply that at some point they were seamless.

Furthermore, according to Answers in Genesis, the jigsaw-puzzle fit of Europe and Africa matches closely with North and South America, respectively.

If the North and South Atlantic Ocean basins are closed, these continents fit together at approximately the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a range of mountains on the ocean floor centrally located in the Atlantic Ocean basins.”

Mid-Atlantic Ridge

But the glaring problem with the evolutionary model of Pangaea and the Biblical creation model is time! From a purely naturalistic, uniformitarian world view, Pangaea represents over 250 million years of gradual geologic processes and tectonic activity that eventually produced the continents of today.

The millions-of-years timeline is diametrically opposed to Biblical creation, which plainly teaches that the universe was created in 6 literal, 24-hour days about 6,000 years ago (Exodus 20:11).

But if an original supercontinent did drift apart, how can that be explained within the limited time in a Biblical creation model?

I’m glad you asked.

Plate Tectonics and the Global Flood

From a Biblical perspective, we understand the Pangaea model not as a slow, gradual continental drift over millions of years but rather as a rapid, catastrophic continental sprint that took approximately a year. If the continents were once joined together, then a global flood would explain the immense seismic, volcanic, and tectonic force necessary to fracture and rapidly move the earth’s crust.

The Bible speaks of this fracturing of the earth’s surface during the flood when speaking of the “fountains of the great deep” bursting from underneath the earth.

“In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened.”

[Genesis 7:11]

Dr. Walter Brown has committed over 30 years to his hydroplate theory to explain one possible scenario of rapid continental drift during the flood. You can find out more about his theory by clicking the link here.

Interestingly, it was a Christian geologist named Antonio Snider in 1859 who first proposed this jigsaw puzzle fit of all the continents, except that he believed the spreading apart and separation of the continents occurred catastrophically during the Genesis Flood.

Mountains Rose Up Rapidly

Another interesting discovery we find in Scripture is that high mountains and deep ocean basins were likely formed rapidly as a result of the catastrophic geologic rearrangement of the earth during the flood. This would explain how sea shells and marine fossils are found on the highest mountain peaks all over the world.

Consider Psalm 104.

“He set the earth on its foundations,
so that it should never be moved.
You covered it with the deep as with a garment;
the waters stood above the mountains.
At your rebuke they fled;
at the sound of your thunder they took to flight.
The mountains rose, the valleys sank down
to the place that you appointed for them.
You set a boundary that they may not pass,
so that they might not again cover the earth

[Psalm 104:5-9 – ESV]

All the primary geologic processes responsible for forcing the catastrophic continental movements during the Flood appear to have likewise begun to rapidly decelerate on and after day 150. Genesis 8:3 indicates that the Flood waters began to steadily decrease and therefore recede from this time point onward, which would seem to indicate that the Flood waters were now subject to new land surfaces and topography rising and valleys sinking as a result of vertical earth movements.

And the waters receded continually from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters decreased. Then the ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.

[Genesis 8:3-4]

Folding and Buckling Rock Layers

Whereas uniformitarian geologists claim that tens of thousands of feet of sedimentary layers have been deposited over more than 500 million years, the global cataclysmic Flood of Genesis leads creation geologists to believe that most of these layers were deposited in just over one year. As a result, many different strata would have been laid down in rapid succession during the Flood, creating the amazing folded, jutted, and wrinkled rock formations we see today through the earth.

Only sediment that is pliable like mud or clay can coalesce into such unique rock formations, which gives further credence to the global Flood. Solid rock formations will always crack or fracture when bent under pressure.

Furthermore, there is evidence of rapid plate collisions across the continents that caused rock layers to rise up and jut out.

Pangaea may have been a reality in the pre-flood world, but only the Bible gives a logical, scientific explanation for how there are similar geologic formations all over the world, how continents rapidly split apart, and how the high mountain ranges and deep ocean basins were formed.

Stranger Thing #6 – Two Creation Accounts?

“Then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living soul. And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed.”

[Genesis 2:7-8]

Bible scoffers and skeptics often appeal to contradictions in God’s word to justify their unbelief. One of the most common objections to the validity of Scripture comes from apparent discrepancies in very first two chapters of Genesis.

When reading on the surface, some have concluded that the Bible provides two entirely different creation accounts, and these accounts, critics say, are contradictory, proving the unreliability of God’s word.

Even Biblical scholars and theologians have bought in to the two creation accounts and as a result have produced all kinds of fantasies to harmonize the apparent inconsistencies in Genesis 1 & 2.

Some Jewish scholars, when writing ancient commentaries on the Old Testament, contrived a bizarre narrative about Adam having two wives — Eve being the second after a character named Lilith in Genesis 1. The sensational legend of Lilith in the Garden persists to this day, but of course there is no no Biblical evidence to support such nonsense.

Many other conspiratorial theories have emerged by scholar and skeptic alike in an attempt to harmonize the apparent contradictions in Genesis 1-2, but all of these attempts are unnecessary. Simply by taking a closer look at the text itself, it becomes clear that there is no need to explain two creation accounts because there is no contradiction whatsoever in Genesis 1-2.

What’s the Problem?

First, I need to address the apparent inconsistencies with Genesis 1 & 2.

  1. In Genesis 1, God makes the plants and trees and all vegetation on Day 3, the fish and birds on Day 5, and the land animals and man on Day 6.
  2. In Genesis 2, God makes man out of ground (Genesis 2:7) and then God makes trees, plants, vegetation (Genesis 2:9), birds and animals AFTER the creation of Adam (Genesis 2:18-20).
  3. So the question is … Did God create the trees and birds and land animals before or after the creation of Adam?

This is usually where most scoffers give each other a high five and drop their microphone, as if they have destroyed the integrity of the Bible. This is usually when the untrained Christian begins to shrink back and doubt the reliability of the Scriptures.

Fortunately, there is no need to fret or fear because not only is there a simple explanation for this apparent contradiction, there are actually TWO!

ANSWER #1 – It’s All in the Details

Far from being a separate creation account, Genesis 2 provides an up-close and detailed account of God’s creative work during Day 6. Whereas Genesis 1 provides a general overview and chronological account of creation, Genesis 2 focuses in on God’s creative work on Day 6, especially with man in the Garden of Eden.

Even though many translations of Genesis 2 imply that God created the trees, birds, and land animals sequentially after creating man, there is one possible explanation. Genesis 2 describes God’s special work in the Garden of Eden beyond what He had already done to form and fill the rest of the earth.

Apparently after filling the entirety of earth with plants and trees and birds and bees and fish in the seas, God redirected His focus on the sixth day and created man in His own image. Having fashioned the crowning glory of His creation in Adam, the LORD now needed to prepare a proper home for man, so He surveyed the land and designated an ideal spot “in the east” and formed the Garden of Eden.

What the Bible describes in Genesis 2, therefore, is not contradictory to what God had already done on Days 3-6, but rather complimentary. After Adam was created on Day 6, God put His finishing touches on the Garden by forming every tree that is “pleasant to the sight and good for food,” along with the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. These trees and vegetation apparently were unique and distinct as being good for food and especially beautiful as the backdrop to the Garden.

The same can be said about the birds and land animals. Having previously created the swarms in the sea and the flocks and herds on the earth, the LORD gave Adam special to privilege of being an eyewitness to creation in the Garden.

In other words, God could have formed one of each kind of animal exclusively in Adam’s presence for a special purpose. As God formed them in front of Adam, the man was able to behold the awesome power of God as a first-hand eyewitness. Plus having named the birds and animals, Adam was given authority over them.

The Garden scene in Genesis 2 is more about the theological significance of Adam’s role and responsibility as God’s representative on earth, having been given authority over all creation. The last of God’s creative works, of course, was woman, as God saved His best work for last!

However, it is important that we understand Adam’s place in God’s created order, as the man was given headship and authority over the animals and also over his own wife. The concept of headship is essential to understanding the Biblical narrative and the role of Jesus Christ – the Second Adam.

In this respect, Eve was not an eyewitness to God’s creative work, as Adam was, and Eve did not receive God’s commandment directly but through her husband.

So one possibility is that instead of two separate creation accounts that contradict each other, the Bible is actually describing complimentary accounts of the same creative work of God. Genesis 1 is an overview of creation, providing a general chronological account of God’s creative work, whereas Genesis 2 is a detailed account of Day 6 of creation that provides the theological framework of the created order and the man’s role of authority over creation.

ANSWER #2 – A More Accurate Translation

A second explanation for harmonizing Genesis 1 & 2 is a much simpler one involving the Hebrew language, specifically when it comes Genesis 2:19.

Many translations, like the King James Version, render the Hebrew word, yatsar, in the simple past tense, which creates the chronological confusion of Day 6.

But other translations, such as the NIV and ESV, have a subtly different rendition.

“Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky.”

[Genesis 2:19 – NIV]

Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man.”

[Genesis 2:19 – ESV]

These trusted translations remain true to the Hebrew text and suggest a different way of viewing the first two chapters of Genesis. These renderings eliminate the need for chronological clarity altogether, by simply saying that God “had already formed” all the birds and animals before bringing them to Adam in the Garden.

Unlike Genesis 1, Genesis 2 does not suggest a chronology. Therefore, the animals being brought to Adam had already been made and were not being brought to him immediately after their creation. Interestingly, Tyndale’s translation, which predates the KJV, agrees with this translation.

It can be argued that Tyndale and the NIV-ESV are more accurate on this verse because the verb in the sentence can be translated as pluperfect rather than perfect, which is in no violation of the Hebrew text but rather perfectly acceptable rendering according to the rules of Hebrew grammar.

“The pluperfect tense can be considered as the past of the past—that is to say, in a narration set in the past, the event to which the narration refers is already further in the past. Once the pluperfect is taken into account, the perceived contradiction completely disappears.”

[Paul F. Taylor – Answers in Genesis]]

So simply by referring to the original Hebrew text, the apparent inconsistencies disappear and the creation narrative is perfectly harmonized between Genesis 1-2.

Personally, I believe both explanations are sound and do not violate the Hebrew text, so either way we can be certain. There is only one creation narrative and not two, further reinforcing the reliability and integrity of God’s word.

The God who Spoke It All to Be

“By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,
and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
Let all the earth fear the LORD;
let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
For he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.”

[Psalm 33:6,8-9]

The more we learn about quantum mechanics and the foundational properties of matter and energy, we are faced with more questions than answers. No matter how deep we are able to peer into the sub-atomic world or how far we are able to see across the vast expanse of the universe, there will always be a point where our limited knowledge and understanding ends and the infinite knowledge of our Creator begins.

One of the greatest confirmations of the validity and reliability of the Bible is that it provides concepts that only could have originated from the mind of an Infinite Creator. For example, the Scriptures repeatedly suggest that the universe and everything in it was created by the spoken word of God.

Now, we may take such a concept for granted living in the “modern scientific” era, but as for the Biblical authors and their audiences, they were oblivious to the concepts of molecular physics and quantum mechanics. When Moses received the revelation from God to write the book of Genesis, for example, he could not have possibly understood the infinite complexity and stunning intricacy of universe.

But if God’s word is indeed true and the God of the Bible is indeed the One True Creator and Lord over all the universe, then we would expect His divine revelation — though written several thousand years ago — to confirm and conform to the reality around us. In other words, as we are able to understand more and more about our universe, our discoveries should lead us closer to God and His revealed Word.

And what do we find? Interestingly, instead of rendering the Bible obsolete and archaic, scientific discoveries only continue to validate the divine nature of God’s word and verify the God of the Bible as the True Creator of the universe.

Time, Energy, Space and Matter

The theory of general relativity, as proposed by Einstein in the early 20th century, provided irrefutable evidence that the very fabric of the space-time continuum is interdependent and interconnected. So if the universe had a beginning, then that would mean that time, matter, space and energy all began to exist simultaneously.

Ironically, God knew that it would take “modern” mankind centuries to rediscover this foundational truth, so in His infinite wisdom He decided to reveal this to us in the very first verse of the Bible.

  1. In the beginning – time
  2. God created – energy
  3. The heavens – space
  4. The earth – matter

So God provided the principles of general relatively in the very first very of the Bible! And in order to explain the cause of the universe, one rationally must look to an Intelligent, Eternal Being who exists outside of space and time and who is not contingent upon the material universe. Sounds like the God of the Bible to me.

Kent Hovind provides a wonderful 3-minute explanation of this here.

The Foundational Nature of Vibrations

I am certainly not a physicist nor an expert on quantum mechanics, but as I read and study the subject, I have found out that scientists are somewhat perplexed by the wave-particle duality that exists at the sub-atomic level. Although it was once believed that energy substances such as light were made of electromagnetic waves, and matter was made of molecular particles, quantum mechanics have provided new insights into the sub-atomic world that challenge classical theories.

To keep it simple, I would like to provide a over-simplified definition of wave-particle duality from Science Daily.

“In physics and chemistry, wave-particle duality holds that light and matter exhibit properties of both waves and of particles … Through the work of Albert Einstein, Louis de Broglie and many others, it is now established that all objects have both wave and particle nature (though this phenomenon is only detectable on small scales, such as with atoms), and that a suitable interpretation of quantum mechanics provides the over-arching theory resolving this ostensible paradox.”

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of quantum mechanics is the notion that everything in the material universe ultimately consists of waves, or vibrations. All matter, even a solid rock, when observed at the sub-atomic level, is made of vibrating particles in perpetual motion. One author explained it like this.

“The force that holds quarks together is known as the strong nuclear force. As quarks oscillate and spin within the nucleus of an atom, they generate waves of space that bind them together. These highly energetic motions are nuclear waves.”

I realize that it is somewhat counterintuitive to think of a stationary rock as actually oscillating and vibrating, but that is precisely how matter behaves at the sub-atomic level. All of creation, from the vast galaxies of space to the microscopic components of matter consist of vibrations.

Interestingly enough, that is precisely what we would expect to discover if we believe the word of God and the God of the word. As the psalmist says in Psalm 33 above, “He spoke and it came to be.”

Jesus Christ is the Word, and as the Creator of the universe, everything leapt into existence at the command of His voice!

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

[John 1:1-3]

And then God SAID, Let there be …

Of course all of the universe consists of vibrations because the heavens and the earth came into being at the mighty reverberations of God’s Voice. God spoke and everything appeared as He willed. Jesus commanded and the universe was created. Jesus is the Supreme Creator of all things, both visible and invisible — spiritual and physical. Christ created the angels and all beings of the spiritual realm to be witnesses to the creation of the material universe. As God was creating, the angels were singing — glorifying God for His infinite wisdom, power, beauty and love.

““Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
5Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
6On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
7when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

[Job 38:4-7]

And what’s more, the very same voice and command of God that initiated the universe is also the same reverberating force that is holding everything together. The Lord Jesus Christ is presently, actively, purposefully keeping everything in the cosmos from immediate disintegration and total destruction.

“In these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

[Hebrews 1:2-3]

All of creation is singing out at this very moment, praising the Creator and ascribing the glory due to Him alone. If only God’s greatest creation, mankind, would offer Him the same glory and honor He so rightfully deserves.

Next time you look at the stars or study the complex inner workings of the cell, may you break out into praise with all of creation and worship the God who spoke and it came to be.

“You are the LORD, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.”

[Nehemiah 9:6]

The Ever-Shifting Sand of Science

“The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the skies above proclaim the work of His hands.”

[Psalm 19:1]

Scientists are being forced to completely rethink their physics and all the schools and universities will need to revise their text books once again after a new find was released this week by the Astrophysical Journal. Nobel Prize-winning scientist, Adam Riess, discovered that the universe is expanding at a rate 9% faster than previously calculated, based on data from the Hubble Space Telescope.

This would mean that the universe is at least a billion years younger than what most secular physicists once believed. Let that sink in for a minute … a BILLION YEARS. These scientists toss around a billion years like its nothing — no big deal. Just a billion years. Nothing to see here. Keep moving along.

But as I have been saying all along, when it comes to the origin of the universe, these brilliant astrophysicists and secular scientists are so bound and determined to postulate Big Bang cosmology and billions of years that they refuse to acknowledge that maybe they have been wrong all along. Maybe, just maybe, they are blinded by their own biases and presuppositions and can’t see the clear writing on the walls — or should I say in the skies!

According to a recent article in Business Insider, Riess said that the universe “is outpacing all our expectations in its expansion, and that is very puzzling.” Riess also added that “it’s looking more and more like we’re going to need something new to explain this.”

NASA astrophysicist John Mather said that the discrepancies between older expansion rates and these new findings can only be explained by two possibilities.

1. We’re making mistakes we can’t find yet.

2. Nature has something we can’t find yet.

Please allow me to translate. “We really don’t know near what we pretend to know.”

King David, writing some 3,000 years ago, said that the heavens declare the glory of God and the skies above proclaim the work of His hands [Psalm 19:1]. God has revealed Himself to mankind through the beauty and majesty of the creation. “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” [Romans 1:20]

Fallible and fallen men have attempted for centuries to explain away God by suppressing the truth in their own wickedness. But God’s creation pours forth speech day after day and night after night as a testimony to God’s glory and goodness, so that men are without excuse. In other words, unbelief is never ultimately on the grounds of intellectual objection, but rather is an issue of moral accountability before a Holy God.

“The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’
They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds;
there is none who does good.
The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man,
to see if there are any who understand,
who seek after God.”

[Psalm 14:1-2]

If a man simply will start with God and His word and readily accept that He created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them around 6,000 years ago — not billions of years ago — he will posses an accurate theological view of the origin of the universe. Also, he will have a solid scientific foundation upon which to explain the intricacies and wondrous mysteries of God’s creation. This is precisely why nearly every founder of the major branches of science has been a Bible-believing creationist. See a list here.

This latest “discovery” is just another example of how fallible men will always be at a disadvantage trying to understand and explain God’s universe without Him. Their calculations will always be changing. “New physics” will always be needed. One thing will never change, however. A young earth and young universe will never be acquiesced by the atheistic, evolutionary community because to do so would be committing philosophical suicide.

Real observational science actually supports a young earth and universe. You can read about 10 of the best evidences for a young creation here.

Man’s limited knowledge and fallen nature keeps him on uncertain, ever-shifting sand, but he who trusts in the LORD will never be put to shame.

“This God—his way is perfect;
the word of the LORD proves true;
he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
For who is God, but the LORD?
And who is a rock, except our God?”

[Psalm 18:30-31]

Distant Star Light in a “Young” Universe

“He determines the number of the stars;
he gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is beyond measure.”

[Psalm 147:4-5]
NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope picture of the Sombrero galaxy, Messier 104 (M104). The galaxy is 50,000 light-years across and is located 30 million light-years from Earth.

Our Creator God is the God of history. Historical accuracy matters to God. Using the basic genealogical records provided in the Bible and extrapolating time back to the creation week in Genesis 1-2, one can easily deduce that God created the heavens and earth and everything in them about 6,000 years ago. Noah’s flood occurred around 4,400 years ago, and Abraham was born approximately 2,000 years before the birth of Christ. To take God at His word, one must accept that God was specific in providing a reliable account of creation and the historical record of the world.

Of course, there have been competing views throughout the centuries. For example, many of the ancient Greek philosophers proposed that the universe was eternal. This view once was widely accepted by the majority of Darwinian evolutionists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An eternal universe provided plenty of necessary time for both cosmic and biologic evolution to take place. But a brilliant Jewish scientist by the name of Einstein changed all of that with his theory of general relativity, which mathematically established that the universe was not eternal after all. The universe had a beginning — a point of origination.

Once the theory of relativity put a limit on the age of universe, the evolutionists had to scramble to come up with a new hypothesis to explain the origin of the universe . Enter Big Bang cosmology. The more evident it became that naturalistic evolution was not viable without enormous amounts of time, the older the universe would get. Although the proposed age of the universe has repeatedly been changed to fit the evolutionary model, right now they are sitting on 13.8 billion years.

That’s quite a difference! Biblical cosmology says that the universe is about 6,000 years old. Secular cosmology says 13.8 billion years. Which view should be trusted?

Distant Starlight

On the surface, one of the largest stumbling blocks for Biblical creationists is the “distant starlight” problem. Secular physicists and mathematicians scoff at the notion that the universe could only be about 6,000 years old. Using modern measuring methods, it has been scientifically established that there are countless stars and galaxies billions of light years removed from earth. If we can see light from distant galaxies billions of light years away, then it only stands to reason that it has taken billions of years for that light to transverse space and reach our planet. The distant starlight argument goes like this.

  1. We can observe light from stars and galaxies billions of light years away from earth.
  2. It has taken that light billions of years to travel from those stars through space and reach our planet.
  3. Therefore, the universe must be billions of years old.

Problems with Presuppositions

The logic of the distant starlight argument seems sound, but hidden within that argument are several presuppositions that must be taken into account.

  1. A Light year is a unit of distance, not time. Light years are used to measure distance in space by using the two-way speed of light.
  2. No one knows the one-way speed of light, therefore it is a convention.
  3. All mathematical calculations that measure the distance of the stars use the two-way speed of light, which is not scientifically viable when measuring distant stars and galaxies.
  4. It is widely assumed that the speed of light has always been constant, but more evidence is emerging that the speed of light is slowing down and could have been traveling must faster in the past.
  5. Although our universe operates today under many physical and mathematical laws and constants, the creation itself was a supernatural act of God and therefore most likely transcended the physical laws of the universe.

Stretching out the Heavens

One fascinating theory that addresses the distant starlight problem has been proposed by astrophysicist Dr. Russell Humphries. Dr. Humphries is a Bible-believing Christian who also is a brilliant physicists and operational mathematician. He believes that as the LORD created the stars on day four of creation week, He stretched out the heavens — the very fabric of space — which dispersed the stars throughout the far reaches of the universe in just a matter of seconds. The Bible refers to God stretching out the heavens at least 17 times.

“It is he who made the earth by his power,
who established the world by his wisdom,
and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.”

[Jeremiah 51:15]

“It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in.”

[Isaiah 40:22]

“I made the earth
and created man on it;
it was my hands that stretched out the heavens,
and I commanded all their host.”

[Isaiah 45:12]

“Bless the LORD, O my soul!
O LORD my God, you are very great!
You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
covering yourself with light as with a garment,
stretching out the heavens like a tent.”

[Psalm 104:1-2]

One Way Speed of Light

Another brilliant creation scientists is Dr. Jason Lisle, who also has proposed a solution to the apparent distant starlight problem. Dr. Lisle’s hypothesis involves the one-way speed of light. For those who are interested in the details of his argument, you can read here.

“He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what is in the darkness,
and the light dwells with him.”

[Daniel 2:22]

““Where is the way to the dwelling of light,
and where is the place of darkness,
that you may take it to its territory
and that you may discern the paths to its home?”

[Job 38:19-20]

The reason it is important to address these apparent contradictions between “science” and the Bible is so that we can give a reasonable defense to a secular world that upholds the scientific community as the voice of authority in our culture. Fallible men are limited in knowledge, will always make mistakes, and are blinded by their own sinful biases. God, on the other hand, has infinite knowledge, is perfect in all His ways, and is the only objective standard of truth.

Believers need to realize that there are viable, logical explanations to the scientific objections of Biblical creation. The conflict is not in the science itself. The conflict is in the worldview behind the science and the interpretation of the science.

Furthermore, we must realize that there is an inextricable connection between Big Bang cosmology, billions of years, evolution and one of the fastest growing religions in our culture — the belief in Ancient Aliens and the UFO phenomena.

Stay tuned til next time, as I plan to address this modern extraterrestrial obsession.

Did God use Evolution?

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.”

[Romans 5:12]
Michelangelo — the Sistine Chapel

As a committed Christian, I would expect secular atheists to reject the authority of Scripture and more specifically the Biblical account of creation. What is troubling, however, is when my brethren in the faith compromise the clear teachings of the Bible and embrace the traditions of men over the Word of God.

There is truly no way to quantify the influence of Darwinian evolution in our modern culture. Naturalistic evolution has become the dogma of our day. It is taught in virtually every public classroom and university. It is propagated by all the major media outlets and news networks. It is reinforced in children’s books and television shows. If the secular scientific community has done anything well, it has successfully marketed one of the darkest and most dangerous lies of modern history. If you tell a lie long enough and loud enough, eventually people will begin to believe it.

And unfortunately, committed Christians within the community of faith also have embraced the fantasy and fabrication of naturalistic evolution, which has forced many Bible believing Christians to make theological compromises that destroy the very foundation of the gospel.

The Geologic “Record”

One of the propaganda tools that the secular scientific community has used for years is the supposed geologic record, which is purely a man-made fabrication. We have been conditioned for generations that the various layers of fossils buried all over the world represent vast ages and millions of years of evolution. Evolutionists shrewdly have written their own history to fit their baseless theory, claiming that each geologic layer is another chapter in the evolution of life.

Fabrication of the Geologic Column

Although I will not use this post to refute all the problems with the evolutionary model of the geologic “record,” I will say this. The fossil record and various rock layers all over the earth present one of the most comprehensive proofs for a global flood. The only possible way that any fossils have been preserved was through rapid burial in water and sediments, which hardened into rock (i.e. Noah’s flood). Also, in all the years of digging up millions of fossils, there has NEVER BEEN ONE TRANSITIONAL SPECIES DISCOVERED that connects one kind of animal to another. If evolution were true and all of the animals alive today have evolved from other species, then the fossil record should be exploding with millions upon millions of transitional species — MISSING LINKS — that connect the present with the past. But to this day, there has not been one missing link ever discovered. Everything we observe in the fossil record are fully formed species after their own kind.

Sadly, many Christians have fallen for this pseudoscience bait and hook, embracing it as gospel truth because “science says so.” But Bible-believing Christians cannot logically embrace millions of years of naturalistic evolution and the Biblical account of creation at the same time. They are mutually exclusive.

For example, anyone who tries to insert evolution into Biblical creation must propose that God somehow used evolutionary processes over millions of years to eventually get all the plants, animals, and humans alive today. But in order to believe this, then one would have to believe that the original creation was not “very good,” as God said it was, but it was somehow deficient at the beginning. Then, one would have to accept that God used millions of years of natural selection to bring about the animals and the first man, Adam.

But if God used natural selection, then that means that He would have used millions of years of disease, suffering and death to “create” something He called very good. Remember, the fossil record and geologic column represents a mass grave of animals that suffered and died tragic deaths. But if you embrace theistic evolution or progressive creationism, then you must say that God considers millions of years of disease, death and suffering as good!

Death through Sin

There is a tragic theological problem with the notion that God could have used evolution to create all life on earth. The Bible is crystal clear that suffering and death are a direct consequence of man’s sin. The gospel says that death is the result of sin and the enemy of all mankind. Evolution says that death is God’s design to bring about higher forms of species. Nothing could be more diametrically opposed than that.

God says that the original creation was very good and wasn’t cursed and corrupted until after Adam sinned in the garden [Genesis 3]. The Apostle Paul says, “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.” [Romans 5:12]

The Scriptures are clear that Adam was the first man created by God. Those who hold to some type of theistic evolution must believe that there were pre-Ademic races of humanoids that roamed the earth long before Adam, and that Adam evolved from these ape-like creatures. But the Bible doesn’t allow for such nonsense! The Bible record is incontrovertible. Adam, the first man, was created in the image of God on the sixth day of creation, about 6,000 years ago.

“Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.”

[1 Corinthians 15:45]
Courtesy of Answers in Genesis

So either death created man in the image of apes through evolution, or God created man in His own image. Again, both can’t be true, and any Bible-believing Christian who tries to reconcile these two mutually exclusive ideas are committing theological suicide. If anyone believes the testimony of the word of God, then he or she cannot honestly believe that God used evolution as a means of creation.

The Second Adam and the Gospel

“For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.”

[1 Corinthians 15:21-22]

Finally, it must be said that the essential integrity of the gospel is directly connected to the Biblical creation account, Adam’s original sin, and the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is called the second Adam because He came to undo and redeem all that was lost through Adam’s sin. Jesus willingly chose to die a substitutionary death on the cross to reverse the curse of Adam’s sin that has been passed on to all mankind. Jesus came to restore eternal life back to all who believe through His resurrection from the dead!

Ironically, God did use death after all to give life to mankind, but not the pointless death of evolution. He used the precious death of the sinless Son of God to save mankind! And anyone who is in Christ becomes a new creation [2 Corinthians 5:17] and is granted a place in the new heaven and new earth, where there will be no more sin, suffering or death forevermore!

How Old is the Universe? And Why Does it Matter?

“For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”

[Exodus 20:11]

Since the advent of Darwinian evolution and the development of modern physics, there has been an overwhelming consensus in the scientific community that the earth and the universe are extremely old. Although these age “estimates” are always changing to fit new models, presently the accepted age of the universe is 13.8 billion years and the earth is supposedly around 4.5 billion years old. Big Bang cosmology with its billions of years has become the primary explanation of the origin of the universe, and science has become the unequivocal voice of authority in our culture.

Having been conditioned to blindly submit to the authority of the scientific community (which is overwhelmingly atheistic nonetheless), we have seen a rapid departure from Biblical cosmology within the community of faith. Those who are honest and logical recognize that Big Bang cosmology and Biblical cosmology are irreconcilable on many fundamental levels.

Many pastors, scientists, theologians, and everyday believers have effectively been confronted with a crisis of belief because it would appear that the authority of science has trumped the authority of God’s word. In a vain effort to reconcile this apparent contradiction between modern science and the holy Scriptures, theologians have concocted a variety of theories to harmonize billions of years with the Bible.

Just within the last 150 years, the church began to compromise on the clear testimony and authority of God’s word to allow for millions of years. Such theories as theistic evolution, progressive creationism, and the gap theory were proposed as viable compromises to accommodate modern science.

What Does the Bible Say?

Make no mistake about it, the primary issue at hand is an authority issue. On whose authority are we willing to establish our most foundational beliefs — specifically the origin of the universe and the creation account itself? Either we put our faith and trust in fallible men, who are proven time and time again to be wrong in their calculations and scientific estimations and blinded by their atheistic biases, or we let God be true and every man a liar. [Romans 3:4]

For starters, I’m still trying to find that verse in the Bible that says God created the universe billions of years ago and used millions of years of naturalistic evolution to make the first man in the image of … an ape. I’m still trying to find those Scriptures that describe the Big Bang, where in the beginning there was nothing … and then “nothing” decided to create everything in the material universe.

I’m still trying to find the place in the Bible where the stars formed themselves using gravity and gas particles and then billions of years later the earth and other planets somehow coalesced by random chance. The Bible says that God created the heavens and the earth first [Genesis 1:1-2] and didn’t create the sun, moon and stars until the 4th day of creation week [Genesis 1:14-19]. Both options can’t be right, so whose word are we going to take?

Just to be clear, Moses says in Exodus 20:11 that in six days the LORD made the heavens and earth, the sea and everything in them. No honest intellectual is able to dream up a scenario where billions of years fits into six, literal 24-hour days. Even those who try to insert a “gap” of millions of years between Genesis 1:1-2 & the rest of the creation week must disregard the very words of Jesus Christ Himself.

“But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’”

[Mark 10:6]

Jesus says that Adam and Eve were made at the beginning of creation. If over 13.8 billion years transpired before man finally “evolved” on the scene, then that would mean man wasn’t created at the beginning of creation but at the very end of creation — nearly 14 billion years removed from the “beginning” at the Big Bang. Both options cannot be right, so whose word are we going to take? Fallible man, or Jesus Christ?

Operational Science and a Young Earth

But what scientific evidence is there of a young earth and young universe? I’m glad you asked. Unlike historical science that attempts to explain things that we can’t observe and test using the scientific method, there are hundreds of observable, testable phenomena in our world today that necessitate a young earth and young universe. Using operational (real) science, scientists can set age limits that help determine a more accurate picture of our origins.

Just one example is the scientific observation that the earth’s magnetic field is rapidly weakening. Think of the earth’s magnetic field like a car battery that was charged at one point in the distant past but has been running down over time. According to the second law of thermodynamics, all of creation is running down and gradually moving from order to disorder. This is also known as the law of entropy. Consider this quote from the Institute for Creation Research.

Earth’s magnetic field

“Magnetic fields naturally decay with time. If Earth were billions of years old, its magnetic field should be gone by now. But it isn’t. This has forced secular scientists to propose a recharging mechanism called a dynamothat supposedly sustained Earth’s magnetic field over billions of years.

Dr. Vernon Cupps, November 2016 —

Not only should the earth’s magnetic field be gone by now, but also if we were to extrapolate the strength of the earth’s magnetic field back into the distant past — say less than 1 million years — even at a conservative rate, the magnetic force would be so great that it would literally rip apart all matter at the atomic level. In other words, the weakening magnetic field creates a limit on the age of the earth. It cannot be billons of years old. Dr. Thomas Barnes explains.

” Looking backwards in time there is a limiting age because there is a limit as to how much magnetic energy the earth could have had originally. Reasonable postulates as to the maximum magnetic field the earth could have had limit its age to a few thousand years.”

As I said, this is simply one of hundreds of examples within operational science that affirms a young earth and young universe. These observations cannot be explained using an old earth cosmology, but because they don’t fit the popular Big Bang model, they are largely ignored.

But as we will address in the next installment, there are also many theological consequences within Big Bang cosmology and its proposed billions of years. Not only is the authority of Scripture being undermined by modern, atheistic science, but also the very integrity of the gospel of Jesus Christ is being threatened.

“knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, 6and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. 7But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

[2 Peter 3:4-7]
