When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, 13and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. 14The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.[Revelation 6:12-14]
The book of Revelation — like all prophetic Scripture — is best understood in prophetic patterns and typology. The 6th Seal of Revelation is a perfect example of how the Bible uses themes and layers to paint a picture of the end times through the lens of apocalyptic literature.
When we compare the description of the 6th Seal to the rest of Scripture, it becomes evident that it is describing the catastrophic events that precede the Day of the LORD and the return of Jesus to judge the wicked.
