They had tails with stingers like scorpions, which had the power to injure people for five months. 11They were ruled by a king, the angel of the Abyss. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek it is Apollyon.[Revelation 9:10-11]
When Jesus stood at the base of Mt. Hermon near Caesarea Philippi — at the very mouth of the ancient “gates of hell” — He made a public proclamation of war against the forces of darkness — pronouncing judgment on the powers of hell. The evil one will not prevail in the end! But only those in Christ will conquer.
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?[1 John 5:3-5]
The gospel commission to go and make disciples is the conquest of gaining back ground and redeeming captives and reclaiming the nations from the devil and his angels. We labor with joy to that end until the very end!
However, there is coming a day when the devil will make his move to open the gates of hell, release his own supernatural army as the destroyers of the earth in preparing for the Day of the LORD and the battle of Armageddon. The prophet Joel projected this fateful time.
Blow a trumpet in Zion;[Joel 2:1-2]
sound an alarm on my holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
for the day of the LORD is coming; it is near,
2a day of darkness and gloom,
a day of clouds and thick darkness!
Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains
a great and powerful people;
their like has never been before,
nor will be again after them
through the years of all generations.
