Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.
[Revelation 3:3]

The Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

What we discover when we take the Scriptures at face value is that this common idiom about “a thief in the night” is always used in a negative context when speaking of those who will be spiritually asleep, blinded by sin, and dreadfully surprised when Christ returns to earth in flaming fire to judge the wicked.
Jesus warns the church in Sardis about the dangers of being spiritually dead and asleep and in jeopardy of being caught by surprise in judgment.
