My Corona Journal — Day 3

“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.”

Matthew 24:6-8

What a difference a day makes. Just stop and consider how fast our world got turned upside down! In a matter of days, our lives were changed forever. We will get through this present “crisis,” but our world will never be the same.

As I write this, thoughts keep racing through my mind and emotions keep flooding my heart. I am not afraid. The LORD is reminding me to remain strong and courageous. He alone can be trusted. I am not worried or anxious. Jesus is keeping me in perfect peace, as long as I keep my eyes fixed upon Him. I am not discouraged. I am overwhelmed with such hope-filled expectation!

Why? Because the Spirit testifies within my spirit that I am a child of God, and He is stirring my soul to prepare me for the coming of the glory of the LORD!

Coronavirus madness has certainly gripped the world and dominated the headlines. Regardless of the narrative that the media keeps pushing, God is telling me something else. I understand many are concerned and at the least are bothered by the uncertainty and interruption of life. The more people I talk to, however, — neighbors, friends etc… — the more I am hearing the voice of reason and a settled confidence that God is in control and that He will see us through.

And that God is up to something BIG! It’s time we join Him!

I have said from the beginning and I will say it again … this IS NOT ABOUT THE CORONAVIRUS! We need to wake up, take a step back and see the whole picture! There is something much bigger at play right now, but the more we listen to the noise of the world, the less we will be able to hear what God is trying to show us and teach us. The more we give in to the pandering and fear mongering of the media, the less we will see what God is really doing!

I can only tell you what I am hearing from God’s word and what I am seeing in the midst of this madness.

I do not believe this is the end — not yet. I do not believe that this is the great tribulation. God’s word lays out the prophetic fulfillments that must take place before Jesus will return [see 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8].

I do believe, however, that these are the beginning of birth pains. Jesus teaches us that there will be preliminary signs that must take place to get the ball rolling per se, but he said that we must not be alarmed! The end is not yet.

Consider …

2020 has been the year of the locust so far, and the locust plagues in Africa and the Middle East are only expected to get worse, potentially causing severe famines. Seismic activity is cranking up all around the globe. Salt Lake City was hit this morning with a 6.0 magnitude earthquake — the biggest since 1992. I expect many more substantial earthquakes to strike in the near future.

Geopolitical and economic instability is pushing our world to the brink. While we are being distracted by the coronavirus, world markets are plummeting, travel and trade has slowed to a crawl, and unrest in the Middle East is intensifying. With all the stress that presently is being placed on the nations, war is almost certainly to follow. Greece, and the European Union, is doing everything it can to avoid a conflict with Turkey over a refugee crisis created by the war in Syria, and that’s just one example out of many.

It’s like the words of Jesus keep jumping off the page, as if they were written for this very day. What more do we need to see before it finally sinks in that this is really happening?

“There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.”

Luke 21:11

Jesus reminds us that the generation that lives to see all of these signs unfold will be the same generation that is alive when He returns in power and glory! I believe that the chaos that we are experiencing right now is the beginning of birth pains, which means that the intensity and frequency of these prophetic signs will only increase and get worse before it gets better.

Now is a call for the saints to endure in faith!

I will leave you with the words of our King.

“So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

Matthew 24:33-35

Even so … come Lord Jesus!

My Corona Journal — Day 2

“For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

1 Corinthians 2:16

We are living through history. Everyone is trying to figure out just how to navigate through this global “crisis,” especially considering we’ve never done this before.

Information is coming and going at a rapid pace. It’s impossible to keep up with all of the reports, posts, broadcasts, and articles. Our minds are being stretched and stressed to the max with an overload of information and an unprecedented level of anxiety for many.

And to think … we ain’t seen nothing yet.

We need the mind of Christ now more than ever, but what exactly is the mind of Christ and how do I get it? Well … it kind of comes with the total package of becoming a child of God.

Our mind represents the mental and intellectual faculties that allow us to exercise sound reason, think rationally, and remain sane in the midst of a hostile world. The Bible clearly draws a clear distinction between those who still operate in their “natural” capacities and those who have been spiritually reborn and have received the supernatural mind of Christ.

“Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.”

1 Corinthians 2:12-14

This is so critical to understand right now. Without the mind of Christ, no one can “accept the things of the Spirit of God!” Without the mind of Christ, the Word of God is foolishness. Without the mind of Christ, a person remains blinded to truth and will not be oriented to the ways or will of God. Without the mind of Christ, a person is given over to fear and devoid of the presence and peace of God.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

2 Timothy 1:7 – NKJV

I leave today’s post with two simple truths to remember.

  1. SALVATION — We receive the mind of Christ when we receive CHRIST! Paul reminds us of the profound and radical transformation that takes place at the very moment of our salvation, as we enter into a relationship and spiritual union with Jesus Himself. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” [2 Corinthians 5:17] When we get Jesus, we get ALL of HIM, including His mind! What a profound concept. Jesus unites His thoughts with our thoughts. His ways with our ways!
  2. SANCTIFICATION — We are responsible to daily give ourselves over to God and put ourselves in a spiritual posture and position so that Jesus can renew our minds and sanctify our hearts to understand and believe the truth of His word [John 17:17]. In other words, we are prone to experience short-term memory loss and therefore we must feed on God’s word as our daily bread and renew our minds to His glorious truth!

So if you are reading this and you have never trusted in Jesus and received Him as Lord and Savior — TODAY IS THE DAY! You can enter into relationship with Jesus right now by calling on Him to forgive you, save you, and give you everlasting life!

For my brothers and sisters in Christ out there … get alone with God today. Be still and listen to Him. Feast on His precious word and let the Word of God wash over you and renew your mind today so that you can understand what is happening in these last days!

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Romans 12:2

My Corona Journal — Day 1

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Isaiah‬ ‭55:8-9‬ ‭ESV

For personal edification, mutual encouragement, and testimonial record, I have decided to journal each day during the Coronavirus Crisis.

As of today, March 16, life as we know it in the U.S. has been indefinitely interrupted. Entire states have shut down. Schools have closed. President Trump has declared a national state of emergency.

As I try to navigate this situation along with the rest of the world, the LORD keeps gently impressing upon me the same simple thoughts. First — Listen to Me. My word is truth. Second — you have the mind of Christ. Third — you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit.

As the LORD revealed to Isaiah, “my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” As God’s people, we must remember that only God knows the truth and only God ultimately can be trusted. Let God be true and every man a liar.

There is so much confusion and chaos and fear and hysteria being circulated and propagated right now that it is difficult to see through the lies and cut through the noise. There is only one way to rise above all the confusion — we must turn to God’s word like never before.

God is always working, watching, waiting, and fully in control. None of this has taken Him by surprise. He perfectly knows precisely what is happening. We had better look to Him and listen to Him before anyone and anything else.

Before reading the news, read the Bible. Before checking your social media pages, check in with God. Before sharing unreliable information, share the gospel. Before contributing to the fear, rest in the presence of the Prince of Peace.

Only when we can see this entire situation with God’s eyes, from His perspective, will we be able to know what is true and how to act in these last days.

666 & The False Prophet

“This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.”

Revelation 13:18

The Biblical meaning of a false prophet is someone who speaks falsely “in the name of God.” Therefore, I believe the end-times False Prophet will emerge from within a Judeo-Christian context, having an outward appearance of a godly man of the “cloth” but at the same time speaking blasphemous lies in the name of Jesus. The False Prophet will also possess immense supernatural powers, using signs and working wonders to deceive the world.

Beyond using supernatural and spiritual powers, however, the False Prophet is described as using two additional methods of influence during the great tribulation.

  1. The Image of the Beast
  2. The Mark of the Beast

Many have undertaken the task of trying to decipher what these two mysteries may be. In full disclosure, I don’t claim to know what the image and the mark of the Beast will be, but I do have some thoughts concerning the possibilities.

The Image of the Beast

“And by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived.”

Revelation 13:14

What is the image of the beast? Some have proposed that it is some type of satanic statue or idol that will be set up in the Third Temple, which will involve the abomination of desolation [see Matthew 24:15, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4].

Others still have suggested that it will be some type of holographic/virtual image that the Beast uses to appear before the masses.

Consider what the Greek word, image, means in Strong’s Concordance.

  • Strong’s 1504 eikṓn (from 1503/eíkō, “be like”) – properly, “mirror-like representation,” referring to what is very close in resemblance (like a “high-definition” projection, as defined by the context).

When we understand that Jesus Himself is called the “image” of the invisible God — the exact imprint of His nature and likeness — it helps provide some context to the “image” of the Beast. The image of the beast will most likely be some type of human-like representation of the Antichrist. Here are some possibilities.

  • The image of the Beast could be some type of cyborg replica of Antichrist who is given “life” by the False Prophet. By life, I believe that either artificial intelligence or a demonic spirit is in view.
  • The image of the Beast could be some type of genetic hybrid who resembles the Antichrist and is given “life.”

But why would the Beast — who already will be a man in physical form — need a human-like replica of himself?

I believe the answer is most likely found in the second half of Revelation 13:14. The Beast — or the human leader — apparently will suffer some type of mortal wound and either appear to die or actually die, only to be brought back to “life” as the image of the Beast. All things considered, this could be a pseudo-miracle performed by the False Prophet that astonishes the whole world and causes them to worship the Beast, whose mortal wound was healed.

If we understand Satan’s desire to mimic and pervert all that God has done, then it is not unreasonable to believe that the Antichrist will perform some type of “resurrection” from the dead to imitate Christ. I am of the opinion that this demonic resurrection will produce the image of the Beast, further deceiving the lost inhabitants of the earth to worship him. Any failure to follow suit will most likely result in martyrdom.

“And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain.”

Revelation 13:15

The Mark of the Beast

“Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name.”

Revelation 13:16-17

Finally, we see the False Prophet using economic control over the masses, preventing anyone to buy or sell without first being “marked,” either on the right hand or the forehead.

What is this mark of the Beast?

The Greek word for mark used here in Strong’s Concordance is number 5480 xáragma. It can refer properly to an engraving (etching), brand or stamp and also can refer to an identification symbol or badge, giving irrefutable connection between parties. Think of the Jews in the Holocaust who were forced by the Nazis to wear the star of David for identification. Notice that the mark is also called the “number” of the name of the Beast, or 666.

Once again, I can’t be dogmatic about this mark, but here are my thoughts.

  • The mark of the Beast is at the very least a universal identification system that can be globally monitored through modern technology.
  • The mark of the Beast could employ some type of microchip or nanotechnology that can implanted into the skin of willing individuals or delivered via some form of vaccination or inoculation campaign.
  • The mark of the Beast will be in some way outwardly recognizable and visible as to distinguish between those who have taken it or not.
  • The mark of the Beast, in my interpretation, is the “seal” of the Antichrist, which is the antithesis of the seal of the Holy Spirit.
  • True believers who are sealed with the Holy Spirit and who possess the mind of Christ will refuse to voluntarily take the mark, even if it costs us our lives.

Although the Beast and his kingdom will be concentrated in the Middle East, his reach and control will be global because of the technological component of the mark. Global tracking and data gathering has never been an option until now, and the Antichrist will take full advantage of GPS monitoring systems and 5G technology.

The Revelation of Jesus warns believers that the kingdom of darkness and the rule of Antichrist will last 42 months (3.5 years) and that we must be prepared not only to face the Beast, but also to be willing to suffer and die in resistance to his satanic system. This is just one of many reasons why I believe the church will be present on the earth during the great tribulation — or the last 3.5 years — before the return of Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself gives a personal call to the saints to have endurance through this time of great trouble.

Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. If anyone has an ear, let him hear:

“If anyone is to be taken captive,
to captivity he goes;
if anyone is to be slain with the sword,
with the sword must he be slain.”

Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints.

Revelation 13:7-10

Furthermore, I believe only those who are seduced, deceived, or intimidated by the False Prophet to take the mark — and do so willingly — will be taking the seal of the devil and deliberately rejecting the Lord Jesus Christ. I do not believe a true believer who is sealed with Holy Spirit should worry that he or she will somehow be tricked or forced into the taking the mark of the Beast. For those who truly belong to Christ, they will not love their lives, even unto death. The words of Jesus ring true.

“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles.19When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, 22and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 23When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.” [Matthew 10:16-23]

Those who willingly take the mark, however, are consciously pledging full allegiance and giving themselves over to the Beast. Their end is sealed.

And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.”

Revelation 14:9-10

We are living in the last days. May all God’s people be prepared for what is coming upon the earth in the years to come. We will need God and His presence and power more than ever, and we will need one another like never before.

Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus.

The Superpowers of the False Prophet

The False Prophet is called a “beast” in Revelation 13. The term beast in this context is best understood as a leader/ruler with authority and power over a designated group of people. His purpose is to promote allegiance and worship of the first beast — the human leader known as the Antichrist — and also to utilize the supernatural powers of the Dragon to deceive the whole world. Whereas the first beast — the Antichrist — is described in terms of a political/military figure, the second beast — the False Prophet — is portrayed as a religious/spiritual figure of significant influence.

In my last post I made the case that the False Prophet will be a renown religious leader who speaks lies and heresies “in the name of God,” which means that he will almost certainly emerge from within the modern Christian “church” as a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He outwardly has the appearance of a lamb (false christ), while inwardly he is a ravenous wolf speaking like the devil himself [Revelation 13:11].

Authority and Idolatry

“It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed.”

Revelation 13:12

The False Prophet will exercise authority on behalf of the Antichrist, and his job will be clear. He is to use whatever means possible to cause the inhabitants of the world to submit and worship the Beast. As the verse above says, the False Prophet will “cause” or “make” the peoples of the earth bow down to Antichrist and pledge full allegiance to him.

Just as a side note, there is one primary belief system in the world today that gains “converts” by using force, intimidation, terror, and subjugation — Islam. The essence of Islam is jihad — or holy war — which is designed to introduce shariah law to every newly-conquered territory. Shariah forces infidels — those who do not believe in Allah or his prophet Mohammed — to convert, die or become a classless slave of the Islamic system.

Now while I do believe that the first “Beast” will emerge from an Islamic context and will rule over a Middle Eastern empire, I do not necessarily believe the False Prophet will be a Muslim imam. He most likely will use the terror of shariah law and exploit the authority of the Antichrist, causing many to worship the Beast for fear of their lives. All who would save his life, however, will lose it for bowing down to another god and worshiping this profane Beast. This is an assault of the first commandment of God. We are to have no other gods before Him.

Satan’s original sin was born out of his pride and arrogance and his desire to exalt himself above God [Isaiah 14:12-14, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4], and the False Prophet will be tasked with using whatever means necessary to make the whole world bow at the feet of the Dragon. Just as the Holy Spirit testifies to God the Son and points people to Jesus, the False Prophet will point the world to the Beast. The last days will reveal a wicked and corrupt generation that practices universal idolatry, blaspheming the One True God and His Son Jesus Christ, while giving glory to the devil.

The Scriptures reveal, however, that the False Prophet will use other means of influence to sway sinners to surrender to the power and control of the Beast.

Supernatural Signs and Wonders

“It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain.”

Revelation 13:13-15

You can read other posts that I have written about the coming deception and the dangers of the apostate church. The spirit of the age is sweeping through our world and the stage is being set for mass deception. Satan is using a strategic combination of moral relativism, political correctness, doctrinal compromise, sexual perversion and seduction, governmental corruption, occult fascination, academic indoctrination, technological isolation, and substance addiction — among other things — to keep the world in his grasp.

I believe the False Prophet will employ all of these methods of seduction and deception when he arrives on the scene, especially when it comes to using artificial intelligence, virtual reality, genetic engineering, and nanotechnology.

But the False Prophet will also have a secret weapon — superpowers!

There seems to have always been a fascination with being superhuman — godlike. It’s the oldest lie of the devil … you shall be like gods!

The False Prophet will be able to access supernatural powers to woo the crowds and wow the masses. Revelation 13 says that he will be able to make “fire come down from heaven” and somehow give “breath,” or life to the image of the beast. His power is reminiscent of Satan’s vicious attack on Job by bringing fire down from heaven to destroy his herds [Job 1:16], as well as an imitation of the prophet Elijah during his standoff with the false prophets of Baal.

Although the Bible calls these “false” signs and wonders, that does not mean that they necessarily are “fake” like an elaborate magic show. The power of the False Prophet will be quite real, but it will be false in the sense that it will be used to deceive and lead the world astray.

The Apostle Paul also speaks of this coming supernatural demonstration of power in the last days. Those who have refused to love the truth and be saved will be deceived. Only those sealed with the Holy Spirit and possessing the mind of Christ will be able to resist the unbelievable powers on display in those days.

“The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

2 Thessalonians 2:9-12

Finally we see the unholy trinity in Revelation 16 — the Dragon, the Beast and the False Prophet — sending three unclean spirits to the kings of the earth to gather for the battle of Armageddon. Again, these spirits perform supernatural “signs” in order to deceive.

“And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs. For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.”

Revelation 16:13-14

As God’s people, we must maintain a healthy balance between the supernatural power of God as demonstrated by the Spirit of God and the authoritative truth of God as revealed in the Word of God. Jesus warned the religious leaders of His generation, as well as ours, about being obsessed with signs and miracles and wonders and seeking those things above God.

And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.

Matthew 16:1-4

In other words, we have all the validation we need from God in His revealed word and the true testimony of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. That is not to deny God’s ability to perform miracles and show mighty wonders. It is simply a warning about motivations. If we need a sign to validate God’s word, then we are dangerously setting ourselves up for deception.

Next time I will conclude this miniseries on the False Prophet by exploring the possible scenarios involving the mark of the beast and the image of the beast.

Who is the False Prophet?

“But the beast was captured along with the false prophet, who on its behalf had performed signs deceiving those who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. Both the beast and the false prophet were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur.”

Revelation 19:20

When it comes to the study of eschatology, or end times, the Antichrist — aka the Beast — usually gets the lion’s share of attention. The Scriptures speak of another “beast,” however, who will play a significant role in deceiving the world in the last days.

The False Prophet

My aim is to use the next several installments to build a Biblical profile of the False Prophet in order to help the body of believers become better equipped to identify him and his deceptive powers. The Lord Jesus consistently warned us about the spiritual deception and false wonders that will characterize the last days. If God’s people are not spiritually and doctrinally prepared, we are in danger of being led like lambs to the slaughter.

False Prophets and the Spirit of Antichrist

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.”

1 John 4:1-3

The Apostle John reminds us that the spirit of antichrist was at work in his day and that many antichrists have already come into the world [1 John 2:18]. John connects false prophets with the spirit of antichrist, which is the satanic spirit at work that blinds the minds of unbelievers and keeps the whole world in spiritual darkness.

John first heard this directly from the Lord Jesus Himself, when He taught his disciples about the coming dangers of the last days and the deceptive methods of the evil one. Concerning the signs of the end times, Jesus warned his disciples about false prophets and false “messiahs” more than anything else.

And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray … And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray … For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand.”

Matthew 24:4-5, 11, 24-25

Just as there have been many antichrists who have come into the world, there also have been many false prophets. All of the antichrists and false prophets up until this point have been precursors and predecessors to what the Bible identifies as “the” Antichrist and “the” False Prophet. These two dynamic and demonic leaders will emerge on the world stage in the last days as the very personification of evil and incarnation of the devil. We should only expect to see a rise in the satanic spirit of the antichrist and in the number of false prophets in these last days, leading up to the revelation of these two unique “beasts.”

And what are we seeing in our world today? Just a surface glance at the modern spiritual landscape of the world and the church at large reveals a mass departure from sound doctrine that has created a pseudo-religious culture with an obsession for occult spirituality, personal mysticism, and ecstatic, emotional experiences. Even more telling is how much the spirit of antichrist has infiltrated the “church” — aka modern Christianity.

The first thing we must understand about the False Prophet is that he will most certainly emerge from a Christian context as a representative of the church.

The Pseudo Prophet

The name “False Prophet” is one word in the Greek — pseudoprophétés — which means one who teaches what is false “in God’s name.” The same can be said of the term “false christ” — pseudochristos — which means a pretend Messiah. These terms are used purposely to convey to believers that these dangerous and demonic imposters will emerge from within the church itself.

A false prophet in general is someone pretending to speak the word of the Lord (prophesy) but in fact is phony (an imposter), acting as a wolf in sheep’s clothing. So when it comes to “the” False Prophet, spoken of in the book of Revelation, we can be sure that he will be speaking deceptive lies and heresies in the very name of Jesus Christ.

The first mention of the False Prophet in Revelation 13 provides imagery that confirms his true nature as a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He may outwardly represent the “Lamb,” but inwardly He is a servant of Satan — the Dragon.

“Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon.”

Revelation 13:11

Stay tuned for next time, as I will begin to look more closely at the power and authority of the False Prophet and his role during the great tribulation.

When Catastrophe Strikes

“No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

Luke 13:3

As I write this post, at least 22 people have been declared dead in Middle Tennessee from a devastating wave of tornadoes that touched down in the early morning hours. Many are still missing and death tolls are expected to rise. Downtown Nashville was among one of the areas hardest hit, suffering immense damage.

Stories of catastrophe, violence, pain and suffering seem to grip the headlines and provide the most riveting news content in our culture. There is something about tragedy that directly appeals to human interest while at the same time speaks to the depravity of our human condition. Bad news seems to travel much faster than good news for a reason.

And I believe I know the reason why.

We are terrified of our own mortality.

Where Was God?

When something as apparently arbitrary and capricious as a tornado devastates an area, we assess the aftermath and naturally start to ask questions.

Why was my home spared when the one next door was swept away?

Why did my loved one die when tens of thousands walked away unscathed?

Why did God protect us and not someone else?

Where was God last night? Did He do this? Is He to blame?

All of us have wrestled with the age-old philosophical problem of evil and suffering. While I will not attempt to answer such questions here, I would like to point out that such questions arise from an innate sense of fairness — justice — right and wrong. This sense of moral fairness has been engraved upon every human heart because we all recognize injustice and automatically appeal to an objective moral standard that transcends time, place and culture.

It should be asked, therefore, from where does this inherent sense of morality and justice originate?

I think we all “know” the answer. Some just had rather not admit it.

But what are we to make of natural disasters and seemingly capricious tragedies in life? How should we interpret tornados and earthquakes and random accidents from a Biblical worldview?

Thankfully, the Lord Jesus gives us the answer and gets to the bottom of the issue.

Unless You Repent …

One day Jesus was posed with a very similar question from the crowds, and He answered in the most fascinating way.

There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

Luke 13:1-5

Notice how Jesus addressed two primary truths in His answer.

First, He dismissed the faulty notion that every accident or tragedy is an act of divine judgment directly connected to a specific sin. Those who had suffered tragedy and death were no “worse” sinners or offenders than any others. The point Jesus was making was that all of humanity proper is guilty of sin before a Holy God.

Death entered the world through sin and because all have sinned, all will be judged by God in death [Romans 5:12]. In other words, death is the common denominator that reminds us of divine judgment. We somehow forget that someone dies every 2 to 3 seconds on this earth. Our timing of death may vary. Our certainty of death, however, is universal.

What is 80 to 100 years to God? Nothing. So if we live to be 20 or 120, the sobering reality remains — we all will pay the price for our sin.

The second truth that Jesus conveys in this lesson is that instead of trying to justify why some die sooner than others — or even under different circumstances — we should be examining our own lives in light of our own imminent death and judgment.

After all, death is certain and tomorrow is not guaranteed. Jesus was getting to the deeper issue and the heart of the matter. Unless we repent of our sins and turn to God in faith in the “living years,” we too will perish and face the Judge of all the earth.

The Nashville tornado is especially tragic for those who lost their lives, but the catastrophe was not wasted. God is giving every single survivor — including those reading this right now — another chance to examine his/her life and take advantage of His grace. As long as we have breath, we are being offered an opportunity to repent and turn to Jesus Christ in faith.

For God So Loved

Some may ask, “where was God,” in the wake of this disaster, but the answer is always the same. God is here. He has always been here. And the good news is that He has made the only way for mankind to be saved from the wages of sin and find ultimate rest in His free gift of eternal life.

God has always been here with arms outstretched, willing to receive all who would believe in His Only Son, Jesus Christ — who is the Only means of forgiveness and salvation.

The truth is that we all will perish in our mortal flesh, but the good news is that God has made a way for us to live, even if we die [John 11:25-26].

Jesus is the One who promised that even though we may die … we do not have to eternally perish, and He is the Only One who can make good on such a promise.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

John 3:16

If you were to die today, are you certain that you will spend eternity with God in heaven?

If so … why?

Thoughts on the Coronavirus

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

2 Timothy 1:7

It is difficult to know who to trust and what to believe these days, especially in regards to the dissemination of information through major media outlets. The media propaganda machine is one of the most powerful and influential weapons used by the evil one to mislead, indoctrinate, distract, and cast doubt in the minds of millions. The days of objective journalism are over and journalistic integrity is at its lowest point in history.

Our enemy the devil isn’t called the “prince of the power of the air” for nothing. He is a master manipulator and deceiver, and among his favorite mediums used to spread lies are the airwaves of radio, television and the world wide web.

Take the now infamous Coronavirus, for example. How should we view this outbreak in a wise and responsible way? After all, it’s primarily been contained to China, although the first confirmed case of “unknown origin” in the United States was just announced this week in Northern California. Local and national media outlets are already warning citizens to be prepared to ration food, water and medical supplies in the event of an outbreak in the U.S.

As of the date of this article, February 28, 2020, the number of cases has passed 83,000, the majority of them in China, and the number of deaths is now 2,867, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Some closer to China, however, are claiming that the number of infections and death ratios are much higher than what is being reported.

There is considerable chatter from legitimate sources that believe this particular virus was genetically engineered in a laboratory as an experiment gone terribly wrong or even a biological warfare weapon. Reports have surfaced that say the Coronavirus is a genetically mutated pathogen that is resistant to all forms of treatment and also has the capacity to mutate spontaneously. In other words, this virus cannot be stopped but must run its course.

This resistance is what has caused some to speculate if the virus could potentially become as deadly as the Spanish Flu of 1918, which killed some 50 million people worldwide. Health officials in China have predicted that the Coronavirus will infect upwards of 70% of the world population before all is said and done, which is 5 billion people. At the present death rate (approximately 2%), the global death count potentially could reach 100 million.

Others are downplaying the dangers and comparing the virus to more recent outbreaks like SARS, MERS, and the H1N1 swine flu. According to this Reuters article, the Coronavirus is substantially less life-threatening than any of its predecessors.

https://graphics.reuters.com/CHINA-HEALTH-VIRUS-COMPARISON/0100B5BY3CY/index.html

Coronavirus infections can range from mild cold-like symptoms to severe cases that cause pneumonia, acute respiratory illness and death. About 20% of confirmed cases in the China coronavirus outbreak are classified as severe, similar to SARS and MERS. Not unlike traditional influenza (flu), the Coronavirus can cause life-threatening symptoms to those with already weak immune systems or other extenuating circumstances.

To be honest, I have been praying for wisdom and discernment concerning the seriousness of the Coronavirus. There are so many dynamics at play here that I will try to put forth my thoughts in a coherent way.

  • The Coronavirus could have been a genetic experiment gone bad, infecting those close to the project and getting out of control.
  • The Coronavirus could have been genetically engineered as some form of biological weapon and introduced to the public to create fear and panic and ultimately to wreak havoc on national and global markets.
  • I do find the timing of this outbreak at least interesting considering that the communist Chinese government was in the middle of trying to squelch a revolution in Hong Kong just a few months ago. Nothing like total quarantine to stop a political uprising.
  • This virus could be more aggressive and deadly than we know, considering that the Chinese government traditionally suppresses information and uses fear and intimidation against its own people to keep them quiet.
  • On the other hand, this virus may not be as serious as the media is portraying it to be and is only being used by the “power brokers” at large as an opportunity to create public fear, disrupt economic markets, interfere with the upcoming elections, and eventually force mass inoculations on the general public.

WHat Should We Do?

In light of all of this, I believe there are some necessary steps to take, especially for followers of Christ, that will help us through a potential Coronavirus outbreak here in the U.S.

  1. Do not fear but have faith — Fear, worry, and anxiety are the antitheses of exercising faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus commanded us not to be afraid and not to worry about tomorrow. Not to mention, fear and stress are the leading triggers that weaken our immune system, so it not only makes us weak spiritually and psychologically but also physically.
  2. Pray — Whenever faced with uncertainty, the first place we should turn is to God in prayer. Bring your worries to Him and trust Him to provide protection, peace, and His presence through every situation and circumstance.
  3. Strengthen Your Immune System — This public health scare provides a great opportunity to examine your lifestyle choices and make necessary changes to boost your immune system. We all know how God has designed our bodies to fight all diseases with a healthy diet, rest, proper hygiene, and exercise. These are our natural defenses against all forms of sickness. Make sure you eating natural foods rich in Vitamin C, Zinc, Magnesium, and other Vitamins. Stay hydrated by drinking water, preferably with lemon and lime. There also are some great herbs and spices, such as turmeric, ginger and garlic, that have tremendous benefits on our immune system.
  4. Prepare — In the event that a sever outbreak hits the U.S., it is wise to be prepared ahead of the chaos. If commerce slows down or even shuts down, grocery store shelves will be empty in less than a week. It is a good idea to stock up on some extra goods and items of basic necessity. Frozen fruits and veggies are a great way to store away healthy food. The government emergency website actually provides some good tips on how you should prep.
  5. Live for Today — Jesus reminds us of how we can become so worried and even paralyzed by fears of tomorrow, when in reality, tomorrow never comes. All we have is today, and I believe God wants us to live for today. We can plan for tomorrow, but we must focus on God at the here and now. Living for the day sets us free to serve God and love others in the present.

I will leave you with the words of Jesus Himself.

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing … But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Matthew 6:25, 33-34

Yahweh vs. the “gods” {TKO}

“And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

Colossians 2:15 — Berean Study Bible

The supernatural battle between Yahweh and the gods of the nations lasted for over 1,000 years before Messiah would come into the world in the fullness of time. The children of Israel historically were prone to wander away from Yahweh and whore after rival gods, spiritually prostituting themselves in the worst forms of immorality and idolatry. The overall record of the kings in both Israel and Judah proved to be one of perpetual rebellion, forcing God to judge His own people.

In response to their spiritual apostasy, the LORD withdrew His blessing and protection from the northern Kingdom of Israel and eventually gave them over to the Assyrians in 722 B.C. The fall of Samaria and exile of Israel was a disastrous blow to God’s people and a significant counter-punch by the pagan gods. But it wouldn’t be the last.

“In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria, and he carried the Israelites away to Assyria and placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods … And they abandoned all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made for themselves metal images of two calves; and they made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal. And they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings and used divination and omens and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking him to anger. Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but the tribe of Judah only.”

2 Kings 17:6-7, 16-18

Although the southern Kingdom of Judah would last another 135 years, it too would eventually be given over to the king of Babylon in 586 B.C. for serving rival gods. This time, the gods of Babylon delivered what seemed to be the final blow to God’s people by laying siege to Jerusalem and destroying the Temple of Yahweh.

“Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—only to go on doing all these abominations? Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, declares the LORD … therefore I will do to the house that is called by my name, and in which you trust, and to the place that I gave to you and to your fathers, as I did to Shiloh. And I will cast you out of my sight, as I cast out all your kinsmen, all the offspring of Ephraim.”

Jeremiah 7:8-11, 14-15

The people and land of Israel would never be the same. Although Cyrus, King of Persia, allowed a remnant to return to the land and rebuild under Ezra and Nehemiah, rival nations (and their “gods”) retained control over Jerusalem and the Promised Land. Israel had broken faith with Yahweh and ultimately had failed to be a light to the Gentiles. Instead, God’s people had plunged into spiritual darkness for serving the gods of the Gentiles.

But none of this would take God by surprise. His eternal plan of redemption was well in motion. Yahweh knew that the only way He could defeat the gods of the nations was to do it Himself. The only way to redeem a people for His own possession from every nation would be to step into spacetime and shine His light to overcome the darkness. Enter Yeshua — Yahweh in human form.

The Triumph of Jesus — the Son of God

Jesus Christ was born of the tribe of Judah in the land of Israel just as predicted by the prophets. The Son of God entered the world at ground zero — Israel — the spiritual epicenter on earth. His mission included bearing witness to the good news salvation, shining light into the spiritual darkness, confronting the supernatural forces of evil, demonstrating miraculous power, and setting captives free from bondage.

And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”

Matthew 8:28-29

Make no mistake. The gods of this age — the rulers, principalities and powers of darkness in the heavenly places — were on heightened alert. The Unique Son of God had done the unthinkable. The Immortal God had taken on mortality by becoming a man. The devil and his angels finally had their chance to kill the Son of God once and for all and put an end to Yahweh’s reign on earth.

As the evil plan transpired, it seemed too good to be true. Satan and his demonic forces initiated a conspiracy among Israel’s leaders, seduced Judas to betray Jesus, manipulated Pilate to give in to political pressure, and convinced the crowds to cry for blood. Their sinister plan was actually working. The Son of God would be nailed to the cross and die like any man.

The gods of this world had won. The Son of God was dead. It was over … or so they thought.

Instead of putting an end to God’s eternal plan of redemption and claiming victory over the Son of God, the gods of this world were actually fulfilling God’s predetermined will and contributing to their own demise and defeat! Even the rulers of this age never could have imagined a scenario where they would be defeated by death itself.

Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

But, as it is written,“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him”

2 Corinthians 2:6-9

The cross wasn’t the tragedy of God’s Son. It was His triumph! Jesus disarmed the rulers through his death, burial and resurrection [Colossians 2:13-15]. He made a public spectacle of them!

Then Jesus went and proclaimed victory over the “spirits” in prison — the angels who had sinned in rebellion during the days of Noah [see 1 Peter 3:18-22, Genesis 6:1-5].

Then the right hook of the resurrection caught the gods of this world squarely in the mouth, proving that Jesus was indeed the Great Conquering King who was given authority over the nations to rule them with a rod of iron.

After showing Himself to many witnesses and commissioning His disciples to go in His unparalleled authority and power, He ascended into heaven to take His place at the right hand of God — the most preeminent and powerful place in the universe. Consider how Paul speaks of this triumph.

“That he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.”

Ephesians 1:20-23

And He commanded His followers — the church — to walk and work and witness in His authority and make disciples of all nations until He returns! In other words, the Lord Jesus has enlisted us in the supernatural battle of the ages to go and reclaim the nations through the power of the gospel for the glory of God.

The Day of the LORD — The Final Knockout Punch

Jesus called this age the “times of the Gentiles” [Luke 21:24], and the Apostle Paul says that the Day of the LORD will not come until the fullness of the Gentiles is complete [Romans 11:25-26]. The Great Commission of the Lord Jesus is the redemptive reclamation of the Gentile nations into the covenant community of faith. In His mercy, God is delivering millions upon millions of Gentiles out of the death grip of the gods and rulers of this world.

Once the full number of Gentiles has come into the kingdom of God, then the LORD will return from heaven to deliver the final knockout punch to the gods of the nations. The prophets all speak of the Day when the nations will invade the Beautiful Land and converge around Jerusalem in one last futile attempt to destroy God’s people.

The Day of the LORD will be the battle of the ages and the deathblow to the kingdom of darkness.

At this moment, King Yeshua will come down from heaven and strike the nations with the sword of His mouth and tread the winepress of the wrath of God. But the Day of the LORD will not only include the judgment of the wicked human kings and armies in alliance with Antichrist, but also will involve the final judgment of the supernatural gods of the nations who are at work behind them.

Isaiah makes this clear.

“On that day the LORD will punish
the host of heaven, in heaven,
and the kings of the earth, on the earth.
They will be gathered together
as prisoners in a pit;
they will be shut up in a prison,
and after many days they will be punished.”

Isaiah 24:21-22

At the same time that the LORD returns to kill the Antichrist and the False Prophet [Revelation 19], He will kill the gods so that they die like men.

 I said, “You are gods,
sons of the Most High, all of you;
nevertheless, like men you shall die,
and fall like any prince.”

Arise, O God, judge the earth;
for you shall inherit all the nations!

Psalm 82:6-8

Even so … Lord Jesus. Come Quickly.

Yahweh vs. the “gods” {Round 3}

“The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. And they forsook the LORD and did not serve him.”

Judges 10:6

In rounds one and two of this series, I established the true nature of the gods of the Old Testament, including their origin, rebellion, and operation as the spiritual principalities and powers behind pagan idolatry in all the nations of the world.

One of the primary themes and theological threads running through the Old Testament involves the real spiritual battle between Yahweh — the LORD God of Israel — and the gods of the nations. We discovered that the Most High divided up the nations for their rebellion at Babel and effectively disinherited them by giving them over to the authority of the sons of God [Deuteronomy 32:8-9].

Instead of ruling the nations justly according to the will of God, however, these rebellious sons of God desired glory for themselves and led the nations away from the One True God into spiritual darkness and idolatry. Psalm 82 provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at God’s disapproval of His divine sons — the gods of the nations.

God has taken his place in the divine council;
in the midst of the gods he holds judgment:
2“How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked? Selah
3Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;
maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
4Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

5They have neither knowledge nor understanding,
they walk about in darkness;
all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

6I said, “You are gods,
sons of the Most High, all of you;
7nevertheless, like men you shall die,
and fall like any prince.

8Arise, O God, judge the earth;
for you shall inherit all the nations!

Psalm 82

Shortly after Yahweh disinherited the nations at Babel, He decided to create a nation for Himself — a people for His own possession — so He called one man out of ancient Mesopotamia and entered into a covenant relationship with him and his descendants. The man’s name … Abraham.

Interestingly enough, Abraham was born into a family of idolaters who worshipped and served the gods of ancient Babylon in Ur of the Chaldeans.

And Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your fathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates and worshiped other gods. But I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led him through all the land of Canaan, and I multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac.”

Joshua 24:2-3

When the LORD showed Abraham the land of Canaan — the coveted Promised Land — He gave it to him and his descendants after him as a possession [Genesis 15]. Yet even Abraham believed God’s promise from afar. Receiving no inheritance in the land himself, Abraham — the man of faith — died believing the LORD would make good on His word [Acts 7:5]. Over 400 years would pass before Abraham’s descendants — the children of Israel — would receive their homeland from God.

Generations later, when the LORD appeared to Moses out of the burning bush at Horeb, He promised to redeem the children of Israel out of bondage in Egypt, fulfilling the covenant He had made with Abraham.

“I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the LORD.”

Exodus 6:7-8

When the LORD resolved to redeem His people from Egypt with signs and mighty wonders, He delivered a crushing defeat — not just to Pharaoh — but more specifically to the gods of Egypt. The Exodus was the first strategic blow in the supernatural fight between Yahweh and the gods of the nations.

The gods of Egypt

“Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?”

Exodus 15:11

After the children of Israel passed safely through the sea and witnessed the drowning of Pharaoh’s army at the hand of the LORD, they broke out into song, praising the LORD God of Israel. The Israelites understood the significance of the supernatural victory over the gods of Egypt. Consider what Yahweh said that very first Passover night.

“For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD.”

Exodus 12:12

The Hebrews hardly could be considered a warrior tribe and were by no means equipped to do battle without the LORD’s intervention and supernatural protection. Moses had to remind the people that Yahweh would do the fighting for them. He was the Warrior in their midst.

And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”

Exodus 14:13-14

When one examines the 10 plagues sent upon Egypt, he will discover that each plague was designed to demonstrate Yahweh’s superiority over the primary Egyptian deities. Even Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, recognized the supernatural component of God’s victory over Egypt.

“Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods, because in this affair they dealt arrogantly with the people.”

Exodus 18:11

Tragically, the first generation of Israelites who entered into covenant with the LORD at Sinai committed the worst kind of spiritual adultery in the face of God by bowing down to the golden calf — the image of one of Egypt’s primary gods. Hence, the pattern of idolatry was established, and despite God’s warning, it would epitomize Israel for generations to come.

“Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the LORD our God to go and serve the gods of those nations … all the nations will say, ‘Why has the LORDdone thus to this land? What caused the heat of this great anger?’ Then people will say, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt, and went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they had not known and whom he had not allotted to them.”

Deuteronomy 29:18, 24-26

The gods of Canaan

Once the children of Israel finally were given the permission by the LORD to take possession of the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua, the supernatural war with the gods intensified. The LORD again fought for Israel during the conquest of Canaan, delivering one defeat after another to the pagan nations dwelling in the land. These nations [i.e. Canaanites, Amorites etc…] were steeped in idolatry, characterized by the worst forms of ritual worship, such as cult prostitution and child sacrifice.

But in just one generation after Joshua, Israel turned away from the LORD to worship these gods. As the historical narrative of Israel unfolds, several Canaanite gods begin to emerge as arch rivals to Yahweh.

  • Baal — meaning “lord,” was the chief god of the Canaanites and became a snare in the side of Israel for generations.
  • Asherah — the primary cult goddess in Canaan and the consort of Baal.
  • Molech — chief god of the Ammonites and Moabites, who demanded child sacrifice.

For a more comprehensive list of the “gods” of Canaan, feel free to check out this short article here, but for sake of time, I will only highlight a few memorable encounters.

Most of us are familiar with Elijah’s showdown on Mount Carmel with the 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah. This was a classic battle between Yahweh and the gods, where the God of Israel once again proved His supremacy.

And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. 37Answer me, O Yahweh, answer me, that this people may know that you, O Yahweh, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.” 38Then the fire of Yahweh fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “Yahweh, he is God; Yahweh, he is God.” 40And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there.

1 Kings 18:36-40

The LORD again showed His power over the gods of Assyria during the invasion of King Sennacherib in the days of Hezekiah, king of Judah. The Assyrian generals arrogantly taunted the God of Israel, not knowing He would respond.

And do not listen to Hezekiah when he misleads you by saying, “The LORD will deliver us.” Has any of the gods of the nations ever delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their lands out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’

2 Kings 18:32-35

That night, the LORD proved once again He alone was the One True God.

“And that night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. Then Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went home and lived at Nineveh. And as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, struck him down with the sword and escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.”

2 Kings 19:35-37

Next time, I will show how the LORD delivered the first blow of a 1-2 knockout punch against the gods and how He will deliver the final blow on the Day of the LORD.
