Reclaiming the Rainbow

“When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”  (Genesis 9:16)

Joseph Anton Koch

IN June of 2015, the Supreme Court ruled to legalize same-sex marriage in the United States, if such a thing were even possible. [Same-sex and marriage are mutually exclusive by definition]

A week later, President Obama showed his overwhelming approval of the ruling by lighting up the White House in rainbow colors. Much of the world celebrated and applauded both the ruling and the bold display of approval in our nation’s capitol.

I’ve often wondered … Why the rainbow? Why was this particular symbol chosen of all symbols to represent the LGBTQ movement? The rainbow flag was first showcased at San Francisco’s Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 25, 1978, and has been a cultural icon ever since. But like all things perverse, there is always a truth behind the lie.

Although, the true meaning of the rainbow as God’s covenant sign to mankind may well have been lost in our secular culture, I happen to believe the leading LGBTQ advocates knew exactly what they were doing when they decided to use the rainbow to represent their cause. And I believe it is one of the most defiant, deliberate acts of rebellion in the face of God that our world has ever seen.

First, let us remember what meaning God has ascribed to the rainbow of many colors. Considering God is Creator of the universe, who spoke light into existence, I think He is qualified as having the authority to ascribe meaning and purpose to His creation. After carrying out the greatest, most comprehensive act of divine judgment in the history of mankind – a global flood – God made a covenant with Noah and the rest of mankind. He promised never to destroy the earth again with a flood , and the rainbow became the sign of His promise.

So every time we see a beautiful rainbow in the sky, two things should automatically come to mind. First, we should remember the holiness and righteous judgment of God, who cannot look upon our sin and who will not leave the guilty unpunished, but second we also should remember the great mercy of God who is patient with us and forever faithful to keep His promise .

Now consider the meaning that the advocates of the LGBTQ movement have ascribed to the sign of the rainbow. The rainbow has become the clarion call, the cultural banner, and political icon of sexual freedom. These are people who choose to establish their identity in every kind of sexual perversion and proudly celebrate for all to see.

In short, the rainbow has become the sign of the sexually perverse and immoral. God has clearly established that any and all sexual conduct outside the proper parameters of monogamous marriage between a man and woman is a gross violation of the created order. Anything else is a perversion – a sin before a Holy God.

Even more troubling is that the very same people who fly their rainbow flags and stamp their rainbow stickers to the bumpers of their cars, are making the most defiant statement before the LORD our God. They are in effect saying to God, “we don’t care what the rainbow means to you. It’s ours now and we will do as we will.”

Writing centuries ago, the Apostle Paul provided keen insight to the cultural patterns and social ideologies that would dominate our world. Consider his words.

“For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips,30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,31foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.” (Romans 1:26-32)

It’s not enough for sexual sin to be a private struggle or even a personal preference anymore. That’s not enough for the LGBTQ movement. In hijacking the rainbow, they also have attempted to become the self-proclaimed voice of authority on sexuality. Not only do they want full cultural acceptance, they also are demanding full moral approval from all parties. All the whille denying God’s righteous decree that resides within every human heart that “those who practice such things deserve to die.”

The world in Noah’s day had to die in their sins because they refused to repent and believe the gospel and the only way of salvation in their generation. Sadly, many more today are in the same danger of God’s judgment as in the days of Noah.

If only these same people only knew that God made a new covenant about 2,000 years ago that provided the only way for any of us to be forgiven of our sin and brought into relationship with God. That covenant is the New Covenant of Jesus Christ, who freely died in our place and was resurrected to give all who believe in Him eternal life. And God provided another symbol as well.

That symbol, of course, is the cross.

The only way we will ever reclaim the rainbow is by proclaiming the cross to a lost and dying world.

The Land of Giants

And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants. (Deuteronomy 3:13 KJV)

The Bible is no book for the faint of heart. At times, God’s Word is not what we would consider to be “kid friendly.” Much of what is written in the Scriptures could easily be classified as outside the proverbial “box.” To say that the Bible often pushes the boundaries of the human imagination is an understatement.

At its core, the Bible is a supernatural book, revealed by the Immortal God. Why would we be surprised to discover that truth is much stranger than fiction? All the imaginations of man cannot possibly fathom the unsearchable mind of God, who’s thoughts are not our thoughts.

Personally my view of Scripture has expanded exponentially over the last year. I read the Bible in an entirely new light. I try to imagine what it was really like in the ancient past, and I especially have become awakened to the reality of the prophesies concerning the last days.

Seriously, there is no movie, no epic tale, no end time scenario, no imaginary dream that could even begin to compare to what we will see in this world before the Return of our LORD. And what’s most fascinating is that I’m not basing that conclusion on a hunch. I’m basing it strictly on what I find revealed in the Bible.

Case in point. Let’s talk a little about The Biblical land of Bashan. In the days of Moses, Bashan was known as the land of giants (Deut. 3:13), or Rephaim. The Rephaim were the giant clans who settled in the land of Bashan after the flood. You can think of them as cousins to the Nephilim from Genesis 6 and Numbers 13. Apparently there were many different clans of giants who had settled in or around the land of Canaan.

The King of Bashan was a giant by the name of Og. King Og of Bashan was somewhere in the neighborhood of standing 12′ tall, according to Deut. 3:11. He was one of the last surviving warriors of the Raphaim. One of the very last accomplishments of Moses before he died was leading the Israelites to defeat King Og and his armies.

Even though Og was one of the last of the giants to live in Bashan, he certainly was not the first. Dating back to the late 1860s, historian and author Rev. F. L. Porter wrote extensively of his own travels to the land of Bashan. In his book, The Giant Cities of Bashan, Porter found overwhelming evidence of these giants. He was an eyewitness to “graves of enormous dimensions,” some as long as 30 feet (pg 12).

To take it even further, the book of 1 Enoch identifies Mt. Hermon as the original place where the Watchers descended in Noah’s day and ensued to produce their giant offspring. It just so happens that Mt. Hermon was the northern most boundary of the land of … Bashan.

Even more interesting, when Bashan reappears throughout the Scriptures, it often is connected to the Second Coming passages and the Day of the LORD.

Consider Psalm 68:21-23

21But God will strike the heads of his enemies, the hairy crown of him who walks in his guilty ways.
22The Lord said,
“I will bring them back from Bashan,
I will bring them back from the depths of the sea,
23that you may strike your feet in their blood, that the tongues of your dogs may have their portion from the foe.

Could it be that one aspects of the last days and the coming of Jesus will be the return of these giants on the earth? If antichrist is mustering his demonic hordes to wage war against the Lord, is it outside the realm of possibility that this evil army will include all kinds of demonic beasts and giant warriors? Not only is it possible. I say it is probable.

We already know the final battle on earth will involve all kinds of powers and supernatural wonders in accordance with the forces of darkness. We already know that grotesque creatures will come upon the earth from the abyss in the great tribulation (Revelation 9). Other demons will be released, and satan himself will be cast to the earth (Rev. 12). My mortal mind might be able to fathom some surreal scenarios, but the Scriptures push the boundaries beyond my imagination.

Honestly, I believe that the last days will be so surreal that our human minds won’t be able to process what we will see. Only those sealed with the Holy Spirit, who have the mind of Christ, will be able remain sane in those days.

Will giants walk again upon this earth before Jesus returns? I am convinced of it. I believe the reemergence of giants in the last days is one of the key components that Jesus was predicting when He compared His day to the days of Noah.

I leave you with one final passage from Ezekiel 39. Clearly this passage is depicting the Day of the Lord and His final judgment on the antichrist and the demonic hordes that follow him.

As for you, son of man, thus says the Lord GOD: Speak to the birds of every sort and to all beasts of the field: ‘Assemble and come, gather from all around to the sacrificial feast that I am preparing for you, a great sacrificial feast on the mountains of Israel, and you shall eat flesh and drink blood. 18You shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth—of rams, of lambs, and of he-goats, of bulls, all of them fat beasts of Bashan. 19And you shall eat fat till you are filled, and drink blood till you are drunk, at the sacrificial feast that I am preparing for you. 20And you shall be filled at my table with horses and charioteers, with mighty men and all kinds of warriors,’ declares the Lord GOD. (Ezekiel 39:17-20)

I find three context clues that again strongly suggests that giant warriors will be judged on the Day of the Lord.

1. The Lord calls on the carrion and birds of prey to gorge themselves on the flesh of these fallen warriors and their kings. This is a parallel passage to Revelation 19:11-21, which is an obvious Day of the Lord passage.

2. Ezekiel uses the word “mighty men” twice in this passage, which is the same Hebrew word (gibborim) used first to describe the Nephilim in Genesis 6 and also Nimrod in Genesis 10. The rule of first reference almost certainly indicates that these warriors are more than human. They are giants.

3. Finally, we find another reference to Bashan in this passage – the land of giants. Coincidence? I’ll let you decide.

All I know is that the end times picture that is beginning to come into focus is far more sensational and surreal than anything I could have ever imagined. And to believe that I will live to see all of this play out in real time is both exhilarating and sobering at the same time.

I can almost feel the surge in my heart and the stirring in my soul that the boy David must have felt himself when he stepped into battle with the mighty giant Goliath. For who should dare defy the armies of the living God?

Enmity

“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (Genesis 3:15)

Enmity – it may not be a commonly used word in the English language, but it carries tremendous weight in the gospel story. To have enmity means to be hostile or have intense hatred toward another. Enmity implies conflict … war.

One of the primary threads throughout the Biblical narrative is that of enmity between the offspring (seed) of God and the seed of satan. Adam was called the son of God and Eve the mother of all the living. Man was created in God’s image and likeness – the offspring of God. Man’s purpose was to represent God and rule the earth for God’s glory. But satan stepped in, usurped, and stole dominion of the earth from man.

At the moment Adam sinned against the LORD, he effectively relinquished his kingdom to the adversary – that ancient serpent – and the war of enmity on earth exploded in full force.

Thomas Cole – 1828

The serpent, the devil, is the father of lies, and also has been a murderer from the beginning. He will stop at nothing to steal, kill and destroy God’s people – God’s offspring. Two kingdoms have collided and the losses are real. Souls are at stake and eternity hangs in the balance.

Today, this enmity is intensifying by the minute. As the invisible, spiritual battle rages around us, it also is materializing in real time among the people and nations on the earth. The battle lines have been drawn, and the sides are being chosen.

Granted, God has already told us the end of the story. God’s word has already revealed how the battle is won. But that doesn’t negate the fact that what plays out in the here and now matters. It matters more than we could possibly imagine.

So before I decide to dive into all the implications and applications of this “seed” motif in the Scriptures, I will introduce the essential gospel message to set the stage.

The Seed of the Woman

Seed is synonymous with the genetic material implanted from a husband into his wife, producing offspring. From this biological perspective, the “seed of the woman” is seemingly a contradiction in terms. In the Biblical narrative, the seed always corresponds to the man. So when the LORD used the phrase, “seed of the woman,” He was drawing a very intentional prophetic picture. The One who was to come and crush the head of the serpent would not come from the seed of man.

The Prophet Isaiah later would predict the coming of this skull-crushing King, as being born of a virgin. The Apostle Paul reminds us that Jesus Christ was born of woman in the fullness of time. The angel comforted Mary and told her that the child to be born to her would be conceived of the Holy Spirit. It is imperative that we understand Jesus was not conceived of the seed of sinful man. He was conceived divine DNA. God in the flesh.

“Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.” (Galatians 3:16)

It is by faith in Christ alone that we are able to become the offspring of God. Sons and daughters of our Father in heaven. Jesus is the promised seed of the woman, which means that everyone who is not in Christ remains at enmity with him.

A Robe Dipped in Blood

He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords..

Revelation 19:13-16

The Day of the LORD. Who will be able to stand before the LORD on that Day? That Great and Dreadful Day. The Day when all the nations of the earth will mourn and all the kings of the earth will seek to hide themselves from the wrath of the Lamb.

The DAY of the LORD is the Day of of God’s great glory and awesome power – the Day of reckoning and recompense. The Day of God’s vengeance and righteous indignation toward the wicked multitudes who dwell on the earth, and His judgment over the spiritual forces of darkness at work in this world.

This is the Day of the Return of King Jesus! This is the Day God Triumphs victoriously over all His enemies. Our God is a Warrior (Exodus 15) and He is coming in Holy Splendor to be glorified before the whole earth. Marching victoriously as He strikes down the nations with a rod of iron and leads the armies of heaven in all its power. The LORD will lead His royal procession, as the heavenly hosts and all the saints march under the banner of King Jesus.

The DAY of the LORD is when our Great God and Savior Jesus Christ will stand on the Mt. of Olives, overlooking the Valley of Decision, and He will wage war on the gathered nations. He will enter Jerusalem through the eastern gate, and He will take His rightful place in the sanctuary and take his seat on the throne of David in Zion — His Holy Mountain. There He will forever reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. Shining forth in all His Shekinah Glory.

The imagery is so pronounced and ingrained within all the passages depicting this Extraordinary Day. And the gravity of the reality of this coming DAY should cause every soul to shudder and every sinner to repent. The intensity of this Day is unfathomable. The dread of this Day is unthinkable. The certainty … unstoppable.

The Day of the Lord – John Martin

As I begin to personally unpack this imagery and attempt to harmonize these events, I pray that God will give me a comprehensive perspective of that Great Day so that we may glorify Him all the more!

Today, I will only consider one prominent motif within the Day of the LORD imagery. The Robe of King Jesus dipped in blood.

Robe Dipped in Blood

In Revelation 19, Jesus gives the Apostle John a vivid picture of the return of Jesus on that Day. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood. But from where does this blood come?

Some immediately assume that this imagery automatically corresponds to Jesus’ own blood, as the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world. But I would propose a different interpretation based on the Old Testament passages that correspond to the Day of the LORD.

Consider the prophet Isaiah’s depiction of the very same event.

“Who is this who comes from Edom,
in crimsoned garments from Bozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
marching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”Why is your apparel red,
and your garments like his who treads in the winepress? “I have trodden the winepress alone,
and from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel. For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and my year of redemption had come.”

Isaiah 63:1-4

The imagery of that Day consistently describes God’s wrath being vented toward the enemies of Israel, and these enemies are always depicted as literal nations that surround Israel and the Holy Land. Here in Isaiah 63, the prophet tells us clearly that the LORD is coming with a robe dipped in blood, but not His own blood — it is the blood of the enemies of God – more specifically here the nation of Edom [modern-day Jordan and northwestern Saudi Arabia].

One of the most important interpretive disciplines in these passages is to always compare and contrast the historical context and overlay it with the greater Biblical narrative. Therefore we must understand Jesus coming literally, physically in the clouds but no less powerfully to earth, riding a white horse, wielding His sword, and marching victoriously toward His Holy mountain. At the very same time, we see the LORD marching through these surrounding enemy nations, striking them down one by one. I plan to develop this motif of the surrounding nations in the near future.

Consider two more parallel passages.

“So the angel swung his sickle across the earth and gathered the grape harvest of the earth and threw it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was trodden outside the city, and blood flowed from the winepress, as high as a horse’s bridle, for 1,600 stadia.”

Revelation 14:19-20

“Hasten and come,
all you surrounding nations,
and gather yourselves there.
Bring down your warriors, O LORD.
Let the nations stir themselves up
and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
for there I will sit to judge
all the surrounding nations.
Put in the sickle,
for the harvest is ripe.
Go in, tread,
for the winepress is full.
The vats overflow,
for their evil is great.
Multitudes, multitudes,
in the valley of decision!
For the day of the LORD is near
in the valley of decision.”

Joel 3:11-14

I dare say few Sunday preachers are bringing attention to this Day. Few sermons focus on Jesus’ blood-stained robe, and even fewer acknowledge that this is the blood of God’s enemies, the surrounding nations who will gather to be judged on that DAY — for their evil is great.

For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” (Revelation 6:17)

Sinai is in the Sanctuary

The chariots of God are twice ten thousand,
thousands upon thousands;
the Lord is among them; Sinai is now in the sanctuary.”

(Psalm 68:17)

AS I write this entry, I am reading Psalm 68, which is one of the most beautifully descriptive Messianic Psalms ever written by the Holy Spirit through King David. Psalm 68 is full of imagery of The King of kings – the LORD Jesus Christ — marching through the desert in royal procession leading a host of captives who are set free. It is the processional march of the King, as He makes His way from Sinai — the mountain of God — to Zion — the Holy Mountain and eternal dwelling of our God and our King. Consider King David’s prophetic words of the Return of the King to Zion …

You ascended on high,
leading a host of captives in your train
and receiving gifts among men,
even among the rebellious, that the LORD God may dwell there.
1Blessed be the Lord,
who daily bears us up;
God is our salvation. Selah

(Psalm 68:18-19)

Mt. Sinai, also known as Mt. Horeb, obviously has a unique place in Biblical history. It is where the LORD first revealed Himself to Moses – in a flame – in a burning bush, and then it would be the place where the LORD carried the children of Israel out of Egypt through the wilderness. It was at Sinai that the LORD revealed Himself to them in a Theophany of clouds, and fire, and trumpets and thunder and in great power and glory.

IT was at Sinai that God made a covenant with with the children of Israel through the mediation of Moses. It was there the LORD showed Moses his glory, as Moses talked with God faced to face. Moses received the law written in stone by the finger of God.

Arnold Friberg – 1913-2010

Sinai was the mountain where Elijah fled from the clutches of Jezebel in the days when only a remnant did not bow the knee to Ba’al. There Elijah heard the still small voice of God in the midst of the fire and the earthquake and the whirlwind (1 Kings 19:9-18). But after Elijah, Mt. Sinai sort of drifted off into the periphery of the Biblical narrative.

One of the few later references to Sinai also shows up in Galatians. Paul, in using Hagar and Sarah to represent the two nations and the two covenants that emerged from them, gives a clue about the location of Sinai.

“Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia”

Galatians 4:24-25a

The real location of this sacred mountain historically has been debated and disputed among academics and archaeologists alike, but today the general consensus is that the mountain is in the Sinai peninsula, or modern day Egypt. But some recent developments have come to light that may seriously challenge that consensus.

Image by Alpha and Omega Ministries … great article here – http://www.aopublishers.com/intrigue_pages/real_mount_sinai.html

Author and Bible teacher Joel Richardson most recently has been on the forefront of the archaeological, historical, and biblical evidence that strongly suggests that the true Mt. Sinai is in modern day Saudi Arabia – at Jebel al-Lawz. He just came out with a new book and dvd bundle that goes into the implications of this discovery. You can check it out here.

https://joelstrumpet.com/store/mount-sinai-book-signed-copy-and-usb-bundle/

Some may wonder what the implications of this discovery will be. But I believe it is part of a revelation of God in the last days to again validate His testimony to the world. Not only do I believe that Arabia is the best possible candidate for the true Mt. Sinai, I believe it provides an exciting and interesting perspective on the return of King Jesus and His literal judgment of the nations and the armies of the Beast in the valley of Decision (Joel 3). On that Day — the Day of the LORD — The LORD will march from Sinai, trample His enemies underfoot, stand on the Mt. of Olives, proceed through the eastern gate of Jerusalem, enter into His Temple and Sit down on His glorious throne, as King of kings and Lord of lords! At that moment all things will be complete – Sinai in the Sanctuary.

There is so much to develop here, so I will be sharing much more on this topic in the near future. But until next time, I leave with you with an image from the Holy Scriptures.

“O God, when you went out before your people,
when you marched through the wilderness, Selah the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain,
before God, the One of Sinai,
before God, the God of Israel.”

(Psalm 68:7-8)

You shall be as gods …

But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:4-5)

The essence of the evil, satanic lie has always been that man can achieve immortality independently of God — that we can become deities while denying the One True God.

Satan used this basic lie to deceive mankind in the beginning, and he is certainly propagating his perverse message today like never before. Consider a few quotes from Joe Boot, writing the forward for David Herbert’s 2014 book, Becoming God: Transhumanism and the Quest for Cybernetic Immortality. Boot said …

“Today a growing syncretistic movement of transhumanists among the intelligentsia … has taken the next logical step in the development of a humanistic, Neo-pagan anthropology and social vision based on the ancient idea of evolutionism. These scientists, business leaders, technologists, futurists, politicians and artists place a messianic hope in the ideal of a post-human world, holding that the key to humanity’s future lies in realizing godhood (omniscience, immortality etc…) by the merging of man with his technology … The transhumanists believe that their view of man and the future is not merely a social manifesto, but a religion, capable of uniting people and pointing forward to a godlike destiny ... This next evolutionary step will mean that the universe is finally awake since, in the new post-human cyborg, god is born.”

What was considered science fiction and fantasy just a generation ago has now become reality, as we have witnessed exponential advances in synthetic biology, nanotechnology, biogenetic engineering, cybernetics, and artificial intelligence. And according to the forerunners of transhumanism, this zealous, religious movement toward achieving “godhood” is accelerating faster than we could possibly imagine.

Everything that God has created and purposed for mankind, satan has corrupted and perverted with the ultimate goal of destruction. Our mortal enemy knows his fate, awaiting a date with the eternal lake of fire, but until then, the satanic forces of darkness will continue to do everything in their power to deceive mankind and lead us into believing the lie that there is a better way to obtain eternal life — a way that in the end only leads to death and destruction.

Many technocrats and futurists like to appeal to the “Golden Age” of the ancients, where men were like the gods and lived for 1,000 years and ruled the earth as kings and queens. Many in the transhuman movement will tell you that it is this Golden Age that they desire and pledge to once again bring back upon the earth. Man’s desire for immortality and godhood is at core of the human soul. The words of King Solomon ring truer than ever for our generation.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.

Ecclesiastes 3:11

The gospel of Jesus Christ is so profound and powerful in so many ways, but at the very core of the gospel is the true message of salvation and the exclusive means of obtaining eternal life. God has provided only one way to live forever and become true sons of God. Our true “Messianic hope” remains in the Person and redemptive work of God the Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who stepped out of heaven and took on human form in order to save mankind from the death and destruction that we will inevitably bring upon ourselves in our vain pursuits to live independently of God. The truth is, provision has been made to give man the privilege of becoming sons and daughters of God. And that provision is in Christ alone.

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

John 1:12

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

John 3:36

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

Romans 8:18-23

Just as it was in the days of Noah, the enemy is working relentlessly to blind the minds of unbelievers and lead the whole world astray with his insidious temptation to become as gods. He is leading the world down the broad way of destruction. If there has ever been a time for God’s people to stand up and proclaim to the whole world the Narrow Way of Salvation, that time is now.

Dedicated to Destruction

When the LORD your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and mightier than you, 2and when the LORD your God gives them over to you, and you defeat them, then you must devote them to complete destruction. You shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them.” (Deuteronomy 7:1-2)

Students, scholars, and skeptics of the Bible all agree that there are some very difficult passages to process. Many people, even within the evangelical community, struggle with harmonizing the Great Yahweh of wrath and vengeance often portrayed in the Old Testament with the meek and loving Yeshua the Messiah of the New Testament.

Any serious student of the Bible knows, however, that the Old Testament is replete with passages showing the goodness, grace, and mercy of the LORD, who is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love (Psalm 103). And the true, complete picture of Jesus that we discover in the New Testament is much more than meek and mild. Consider Paul’s description of the return of the Lord Jesus .

when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels 8in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9)

Even still, there are some divine acts of judgment recorded in the Scriptures, especially the Old Testament, that appear on the surface to be morally problematic. I am speaking specifically about the world-wide flood of Noah’s day, which destroyed all life on earth including children, and the conquest of the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua, where the LORD commanded that all the wicked nations in the land be dedicated to destruction. In other words, God commanded the Israelites to kill everyone — men, women and children — and show no mercy to them.

It is precisely this – total annihilation – that many consider a stumbling block. As one skeptic said, “if your God is a God who would tell His people to ruthlessly murder innocent women and children, then He is a sick, evil, sadistic God who is not worth worshipping.”

Now, there are many approaches when answering and addressing this potentially problematic issue, and many have written in depth from various perspectives to provide a rational solution. But for sake of time, I would like to make one simple observation and also provide one simple solution.

I believe that the key to understanding why God commanded Joshua and the Israelites to dedicate the Amorites and Canaanites to destruction is found in Genesis 6. There is one obvious connection between God’s judgment in the days of Noah and His judgment in days of Joshua — the Nephilim.

When Moses sent the 12 spies on a reconnaissance mission into the land of Canaan, what did they report? Who did they see? Why were 10 of the 12 spies convinced they had no chance of defeating the inhabitants of the land? Read it for yourself.

However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there… So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, ‘The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.’” (Numbers 13:28, 32-33)

In Deuteronomy Moses again refers to the sons of Anak, the descendants of the Nephilim, living in the Promised Land. He says, “Hear, O Israel: you are to cross over the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than you, cities great and fortified up to heaven, people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’ (Deuteronomy 9:1-2)

Is it mere coincidence that the only two times the LORD God commanded the total destruction of a race of people involved the Nephilim giants? Not only were these giants defiled spiritually and charged demonically, but also they were utterly corrupt genetically. The Bible is clear that the abominable practices of these wicked nations living in Canaan included demonic practices of sorcery, witchcraft, divination, child sacrifice, and necromancy (Deuteronomy 18) and also every debased act of sexual immorality including, homosexuality, incest and bestiality (Leviticus 18). These are the very same satanic practices that were taking place during the days of Noah.

So to understand why the LORD would have commanded the Israelites to completely destroy every man, woman and even child living in the Promised Land, one must also understand the connection between the demonic incursion of Genesis 6 leading to the flood and the reintroduction of this very same wicked race of giants leading to the conquests of Canaan. Something so profane had happened among theses nations that God knew they must all be utterly destroyed. Anything less would give these demonic beings the chance to survive and potentially eliminate the promised seed of Messiah and usurp God’s ultimate plan of redemption.

When we see the flood and the conquest of Canaan in light of the Nephilim, we gain a more comprehensive view of the Bible. Why else would the LORD command Israel not to intermarry with these nations? They were genetically corrupt and demonically possessed. Any association with them would lead Israel into gross immorality and pagan idolatry. The reason the LORD showed these hybrid giant races no mercy is most likely because they were beyond redemption, having utterly corrupted both flesh and spirit. The only resolution was to dedicate them to destruction.

Corrupt beyond Cure

Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with violence. 12And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh,c for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.” (Genesis 6:11-13)

Whatever was happening in Noah’s day was so corrupt and so irreversibly infected with evil that God determined every living thing must die. Only Noah and his family were found to be blameless and pure on the earth. That means that every other living thing with the breath of life in its lungs had been corrupted to its core. What could possibly have caused all flesh on the earth to be utterly ruined at its core?

Although we could attribute this complete corruption of all flesh as merely the natural effects of man’s rebellion and wickedness on earth, does the Bible point to something more defiled that caused the genetic degradation of all biological life and the total permeation of evil? Is there anything in the Biblical text that suggests that Noah was more than just spiritually pure in God’s sight, but also that he and his family were somehow the only people left on earth who were “genetically” undefiled?

It makes one wonder how utterly depraved the earth must have been for God literally to wash it clean and start over with just 8 people. The harshness of God’s judgment during the flood was unusual and unique. Was there no hope for the pre-flood world? Was there no chance for redemption? Perhaps mankind had somehow become so spiritually and genetically defiled before the flood that he no longer resembled the image of God?

Our knowledge of the antediluvian world basically is limited to what we read in the first 9 chapters of Genesis and a few other references in Scripture. Although we can piece together a general picture of the pre-flood world using the Scriptures, there are obviously some missing puzzle pieces that prevent us from seeing the fine details. Fortunately, some of these details can be found in extra Biblical sources that were widely read and circulated in what is known as 2nd Temple Jewish literature. These books, such as 1 Enoch and Jubilees, were highly respected and valued by the community of faith, even though they traditionally have not been recognized as canonical. Some scholars completely reject such Apocryphal works as completely useless to the church, while others consider them quite useful for establishing a historical and theological context for 2nd Temple Judaism and the early church.

The book of Enoch is especially interesting for several reasons. First, we know that practically all 1st Century Jews — including the Apostles and Jesus — would have studied and been very familiar with the book of Enoch. Secondly, the book of Enoch is quoted and included in the Bible by Jude (see Jude 14-15). Again, I am not saying that Enoch is inspired Scripture, but I am saying that many of these extra Biblical books can be of great historical and theological value. Thirdly, the book of Enoch provides a behind the scenes perspective into the pre-flood world of Noah’s day, especially concerning the rebellious angelic incursion in Genesis 6. Let’s take a look at some of these details.

The Book of Enoch proper is divided into several subsections, such as the book of Noah and other parables. Although the book is attributed to Enoch – the 7th from Adam – the historical authorship is unknown. Despite the mystery surrounding the book, I believe Enoch preserves unique and reliable insight of the Genesis 6 narrative.

According to Enoch, the sons of God — called the Watchers (Daniel 4:17) — conspired together to abandon their proper domain in heaven and transgress the God of heaven by taking human wives and producing offspring with them — the giants. These Watchers, 200 in number, descended upon Mt. Hermon and commenced to corrupting the earth in every way imaginable. Enoch explains how these Watchers not only corrupted human flesh by cross breeding but also indicates how they corrupted all plant and animal life in a similar way. It is not difficult to believe that these intellectually superior, angelic beings had the knowledge and advanced technology to set the human race on a crash course of destruction. In other words, the Watchers introduced forbidden knowledge and demonic practices to mankind that would effectively accelerate their own death and destruction.

Consider one passage from the Book of Enoch 9:6-9

Thou seest what Azâzêl hath done, who hath taught all unrighteousness on earth and revealed the eternal secrets which were (preserved) in heaven, which men were striving to learn: 7. And Semjâzâ, to whom Thou hast given authority to bear rule over his associates. 8. And they have gone to the daughters of men upon the earth, and have slept with the women, and have defiled themselves, and revealed to them all kinds of sins. 9. And the women have borne giants, and the whole earth has thereby been filled with blood and unrighteousness.

In Chapter 8 of Enoch, this very same Azâzêl, one of the Watchers, introduced new technology and metallurgy to mankind to build weapons of war, while the other Watchers taught men and women forbidden occult knowledge, divination, astrology, sorcery, blood sacrifice, and all forms of witchcraft, leading men to the worship of demons (Enoch 19).

The Genesis 6 angelic incursion was an all-out demonic assault against mankind with the intention of destroying the entire human race and establishing the kingdom of darkness on earth. The primary motivation of this rebellion, however, is connected to the greater gospel story, involving enmity between the seed of the woman and the seed of Satan (Genesis 3:15). Satan and his fallen ones were ultimately attempting to wipe the seed of the woman from the face of the earth to eliminate any and every possibility for the birth of the future Messiah – Jesus Christ.

This is why Noah and his family were so vital, not just to the survival of mankind, but ultimately for the eternal salvation of mankind that would be made possible through the coming Messiah. It was about preserving the pure seed — the uncorrupted genetic traits found in Noah and his family — which eventually would be passed down through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, David and eventually to Jesus Himself. God’s plan of redemption was never to be thwarted, as God has proven time and time again.

In light of this, there are some very disturbing machinations of men that have begun to materialize in our day that seem all too familiar to what was happening in Noah’s day. With the completion of the human genome project in 2003, geneticists have regained the ability to analyze, manipulate, and enhance human and animal genes since it first happened in the days of Noah. Although scientists have insisted that the primary application of mapping the human genome is for the benefit of mankind and to provide medical breakthroughs that will save millions of lives, others clearly have different motives.

News stories are appearing daily around the world revealing the nefarious motivations behind genetic manipulations and biogenetic engineering. Here are only a few that come to mind most recently. The first link involving U.S. Department of Health and Human Services using aborted baby body parts to make “humanized mice,” (with our tax payer dollars no less).

The second story below details how scientists in China have already successfully accomplished gene editing to create the first “designer babies.” And these applications are the ones we are only allowed to see. Who really knows how far the limits have been pushed in the private sector or within top secret government programs?

Finally, it has been well documented that the U.S. military has invested millions of dollars in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or D.A.R.P.A., which specializes in advance weaponry, and more recently biogenetic engineering. Many believe the inevitable application of this technology will be the creation of the “super soldiers,” who will be both genetically and robotically enhanced to excel on the battle field.

For the first time in the modern era, we are living in a generation with the technological capabilities and scientific knowledge that potentially could lead to the corruption of all flesh once again, as it was in the days of Noah.

The Fall of …. Angels? Part 2

And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day.” (Jude 1:6)

In Part 1 of this installment, I made the case from Scripture that the sons of God in Genesis 6 were angelic beings who descended to earth and took human wives for themselves, producing a hybrid race of giants called the Nephilim. In this post, I would like to answer the question, “Is that even possible?”

One of the first objections to the fallen angel paradigm in Genesis 6 comes from something our Lord Jesus says in Matthew 22. When speaking to his disciples about the future resurrection, Jesus said the following…

For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.” (Matthew 22:30)

Does this one verse eliminate any possibility that angelic beings could somehow take on human form and sexually reproduce with mankind? Not in the least! As a matter of fact, I believe the words of Jesus actually do more to strengthen and support the case for the forbidden angelic incursion in Genesis 6 than anything else. Let me explain.

The first question we must answer is, “do we find any Biblical support for immaterial, angelic beings taking on human form and carrying out physical actions on earth.” The answer is yes. For sake of time I will share only a few.

Angels and Abraham

In Genesis 18, Abraham is visited by the LORD and two angels in human form. This is a pre-incarnate manifestation of God the Son (Christophany) and the physical manifestation of two angelic beings along with Him.

And the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. 2He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth 3and said, “O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. 4Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, 5while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said… Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate.” (Genesis 18:1-5)

To summarize, the LORD and two angels appear to Abraham in physical form and commence to rest, eat, drink and even have their feet washed. The two angels eventually go into Sodom on a rescue mission for Lot, where they remained in physical form. They even grabbed Lot at one point and pulled him back in the house (Gen. 19:10). But we also know that these were no ordinary men because they were able to strike the perverse mobs of Sodom with blindness. These are angelic beings interacting with men on a physical level.

Angels and Acts

Angels play a prominent role in the book of Acts, and in Acts 12 an angel is sent to rescue Peter from prison. Consider how this angelic being is described. “And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, ‘Get up quickly.’ And the chains fell off his hands. (Acts 12:7)

This angel was able to physically strike Peter on the side to wake him up. He obviously had taken on human form to rescue Peter, but the angel also had supernatural powers to break the bonds and open the gates.

There are many other Biblical examples of angelic beings taking on human form. Gideon, Sampson, Hagar, and Joshua, also had encounters with angelic beings appearing in human form. Therefore, it is not problematic for the angelic beings in Genesis 6 also to manifest in human form for the purpose of sexually reproducing with the daughters of men.

Some have proposed that perhaps these fallen “sons of God” used high level artificial insemination or biogenetic engineering to cross breed with humans, which produced the hybrid giant race of the Nephilim. I am open to this scenario as a viable option, but I believe the more likely scenario in view involves the perverse act of forbidden sexual immorality between two races that were never intended to “marry.”

Angels and Jesus

Now back to the teaching of Jesus, who says that in the resurrection, believers in Christ will not marry or be given in marriage, but we will be like the angels in heaven. In other words, in the resurrection and the kingdom of our LORD, we will no longer possess or express sexual desires but we will become like the angels who are in heaven.

The angels in heaven – in the unseen realm – do not have the capacity for sexual relations or reproduction. This is precisely why I believe what we discover in Genesis 6 is a gross violation of God’s created order and clear perversion of the nature of the angelic host of heaven. These rebellious, angelic beings chose to leave their proper domain and enter into the physical realm in order to corrupt the entire human race. The Genesis 6 incursion was the highest act of treason against the Throne of Heaven, which brought about the total destruction of the earth and the end of all flesh, except Noah and his family.

Angels aren’t supposed to take on flesh apart from God’s good will, and especially not with the intent to carry out the most wicked act of corrupting human flesh in a violation of the created order. In light of this, Jude’s description of the Genesis 6 rebellion makes all the sense in the world.

And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day.” (Jude 1:6)

As we will see next time, this very same corruption of all flesh that occurred in the days of Noah is beginning to happen again today.

The Fall of … angels? Part 1

The Nephilim (giants) were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.”(Genesis 6:4)

The Fall of Man

One doesn’t need to read very far into the Genesis account to discover the the fall of man. Genesis 3 vividly describes how the serpent, the adversary of God, seduced Eve with cunning lies, subverted Adam’s authority as God’s representative on earth, and led the entire human race down the tragic path of sin and death. As a result God cast man out of the garden, cut off Adam and Eve from their very Source of life, and cursed the whole creation. The fall of man caused utter spiritual ruin for the human race, and we continue to suffer the devastating consequences to this very day.

Most people operating from a Biblical worldview understand the significance of Adam’s sin and the consequent fall of the entire human race. After all, the doctrine of original sin is foundational to the orthodox teachings of the church. For example, the Apostle Paul writes … “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned” (Romans 5:12), and also he says, “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:22).

There has always been a theological connection between Adam, the son of God (Luke 3:38), with Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Jesus is the “second Adam,” who came to undo what the first Adam had done and to do what the first Adam could not. That is why there truly are only two kinds of people in the world — those who still are in Adam (i.e. separated from God in their sins) and those who are in Christ (i.e. saved by God’s grace through faith). The mission of Jesus from the very beginning has always been to redeem what was lost in the garden. But there is more to the mission of Jesus.

The Fall of the “sons of God”

The fall of man is not the only fall that we read about in the early chapters of Genesis. If we aren’t attentive students of the Word of God, we can easily gloss over one of the most significant events ever to take place in human history. In Genesis 6, we read about another fall — a celestial fall. And this one brief but theologically charged passage of Scripture is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the origin of evil and ultimately of the greater mission of Jesus Christ.

Inherent in the Genesis account is a heavenly rebellion, a satanic subversion of the throne of God. These heavenly beings are called the “sons of God,” and their wicked rebellion in the days of Noah must not be overlooked. The sons of God did that which was forbidden in the sight of God and further corrupted the earth to a point of no return.

Before we take time to discuss what these fallen sons of God had done in Noah’s day, let us take a minute to properly identify who they were.

Descendants of Seth or heavenly beings?

If one were to pick up a modern study Bible today and read the study notes on Genesis 6:1-4, he would likely discover that the interpretation of the term, “sons of God,” alludes to the godly human lineage of Seth, son of Adam, and the “daughters of men” refers to the ungodly offspring of Cain. The problem with this interpretation is that the Old Testament never connects the sons of God with the offspring of Seth. This “Sethite” view of Genesis 6 is a man-made construct that first emerged in the 1500s to try to explain away the plain reading of the Biblical text and give a more palatable interpretation. The orthodox traditional view of both the Jews and the early church was that the sons of God in Genesis 6 were referring to the fall of the angelic host of heaven. [I will address the problems with the Sethite view in detail in a later post.]

When we harmonize the Genesis 6 account with other references to the sons of God in the Old Testament, it is clear that these were no ordinary human beings. For example, the book of Job uses the term, “sons of God,” when describing a heavenly assembly.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.” (Job 1:6)

Furthermore, we read in Job 38 the rebuke of the LORD, where He rhetorically asks Job a series of questions to silence Job’s complaint. Consider the LORD’s description of the creation account …

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy
?
” (Job 38:4-7)

According to the LORD, the sons of God were singing and shouting for joy as witnesses to God’s creation. These are clearly divine beings in the heavenly realm, not humans in the earthly realm. Likewise, what we read in Genesis 6 depicts much more than the descendants of Seth intermarrying with the descendants of Cain, and to force this view onto Genesis 6 clearly violates the text. But what about the New Testament? How did the New Testament writers interpret Genesis 6? I’m glad you asked.

New Testament Interpretation of Genesis 6

Both Peter and Jude make clear references to this heavenly rebellion in the New Testament. Let’s first consider what Peter had to say about Noah’s day.

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly.” (2 Peter 2:4-5)

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared.” (1 Peter 3:18-20)

Peter clearly connects this heavenly rebellion of the past — where the angels “sinned” and “formally did not obey” — with the days of Noah.

Jude also makes this very same connection. He writes, “And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day… Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.” Jude 1:6-7)

Jude explains that the true interpretation of Genesis 6:1-4 involves the angelic host who did not keep their proper domain but abandoned their proper abode in the heavenly realm and entered into the earthly realm to carry out profane and grotesque acts of sexual immorality and pursue unnatural desire. This is what is clearly implied when it says “the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them.” (Genesis 6:4) It is also interesting to note that Jude quotes from the ancient book of Enoch (Jude 1:14), which provides a detailed account of the Watchers who came down in Genesis 6.

The Nephilim

So what was the result of this unholy act of immorality? What kind of offspring was produced through this intermingling of the sons of God with the daughters of men? The Bible says that this perverse angelic incursion produced an entirely new race of giants, called Nephilim, which became the mighty men of old and heroes of renown. That’s right. Giants. There were giants on the earth in Noah’s day, and even after that. As bizarre as that may seem to some, it is true.

And as I will share next time, the giants unlock many ancient mysteries that also will help us understand the future. For the truth is much heavier than fiction.
